She shivered strong enough for her teeth clatter together. The whimpering that came from her grew in volume, so that she’d sob from time to time. She curled up in a foetus-position on the bed, making herself small, trying to build herself a cocoon with her bed sheets.
He slowly and gently stroked her hair. When she flinched back, he didn’t show his hurt on his face. Instead he steadied his voice and said evenly, “Go to sleep Caroline. I’ll make sure no one hurts you...”
She continued her shuddering and shivering, never having heard him. She wasn’t mentally with him. She was still at the very same place he had found her. Watching her mother getting torn apart by vampires. The same that turned to her with blood-stained faces and cruel, sharp-teethed smiles.
He grabbed his gun, and settled at the foot of her bed. He started cleaning his gun, polishing it. All the time staring at the door of their room, keeping his promise to her. Already thinking of how to keep her safe for the future, and where to go hunt for the vampire nest.
