Chapter 35
Beyond the Veil, or the Chapter of Amazing and Dramatic Entrances and Exits
As Harry looks at the fragile glass orb, a battalion of Death Eaters appear and the drawling voice of Lucius Malfoy commands Harry to hand him the orb.
*snort* Yeah, as if.
The chapter starts out with Harry asking the simplest of questions about what was contained in the sphere, questions that very quickly let Malfoy and the others realize that Harry has no idea what the prophesy is about, how the sphere works or why Voldemort wants it for himself. But no, Harry isn't dim (but he is genuinely in the dark); he uses this question/answer time with dear Lucius in order to get himself in position to get them the hey outta there.
Then the Battle of the Department of Mysteries begins! And what a magical action-adventure sequences it is! It's scary! It's heroic! It's funny! It's not-so-funny! So instead of trying to summarizing every wee little thing, here's an outline of the action:
*--*Harry, Hermione & Neville run one way; Ron, Ginny & Luna run another.
-->HHN run to the room with the bell jar in it; duel with 2 DE; one DE falls into the bell jar and now has a baby head.
-->They enter a small, dark, cluttered office before they can reach the Black Hallway again.
* 2 DEs follow then; HHN are knocked off their feet and injured; Hermione is then hit with a spell with a purple flame and rendered unconscious by Dolohov. Neville gets the side of his face smashed in and his wand snapps. Harry is in a panic. Neville carries Hermione out of the room.
--> Harry & Neville enter the Black Hallway; a door to their right opens; meet up with RGL.
*Ron is very white and giggling; Ginny has a sprained ankle; Luna is, well, Luna.
* Harry helps Ron; Luna helps Ginny--But then, 3 DEs enter, led by Bellatrix Lestrange (hisssssss)
--> Harry smashes through the door ahead; they are in the Brain Room.
* HLN run around sealing all the doors.
* Oops, Bellatrix gets through one; Luna is knocked out.
* Ron Accio's a brain and gets wrapped up in it; Ginny is hit with a Stunning spell. Only Harry & Neville are left standing.
--> Harry runs through the door that's standing open, leading to the Veil Room. He falls down the stone steps; 10 DEs follow.
* Harry tries to bargain with Malfoy (HA!)
* Neville to the rescue!!
* Neville is taken. Neville is Crucio'ed by Bellatrix (hisssss). Merlin, Neville is brave.
Now, Potter, either give us the prophecy, or watch your little friend die the hard way, [she says]. ...Then, high above them, two more doors burst open and five more people sprinted into the room: Sirius, Lupin, Moody, Tonks, and Kingsley. (YAY!) UK paper ed, 706
The battle enters a new level. Harry helps Neville, but then Harry is captured by a DE. Neville jabs Hermione's wand into the eyehole of the mask (go Neville!!) of Macnair.
**Neville is hit with the Jelly-Legs Jinx by Dolohov; Dolohov bears down on Harry, but Sirius saves him. Then, Harry saves Sirius by Petrifying Dolohov.
**Harry once again tries to get Neville out; Harry is taken by Malfoy; Harry tosses the Prophecy to Neville, who scoops it up.
**Harry blasts Malfoy off of him with Impedimenta! and saved by Lupin.
**Harry once again tries to get Neville out by grabbing his robes. Neville's robes tear, and...
the prophesy falls out and shatters.
Then, DUBBLEDORE! appears like an avenging angel. Sirius duels with Bellatrix, and then he is hit by a jet of light square in the chest. He falls, slowly, gracefully through the ancient doorway and disappear[s] behind the veil, which fluttered for a moment as though in a high wind, then fell back into place. (p 711)
Harry is restrained by Remus, who tells him that Sirius is gone. He's gone.
[And at this moment, a little over two years ago, we learned that Jo killed off Harry's godfather. I don't know about y'all but I was in shock, and then I cried.]
