These Movies are Worth More than 25¢

Okay, so we have this garage sale tommorrow, and as always, the night before a garage sale I go through everything in the dead of night and rescue anything my clean-freak mother tries to sell that I hold near and dear to my heart. Now, I use that phrase lovingly, "clean-freak", but seriously the woman likes to get rid of things. I totally get it, but I'm a bit of a pack rat, so I've gotta do me right.

Anyways, while today's kids have this to be the earmark for classic films from their childhood to deal with:

Quick Bella, cut yourself to prove your love!!!

...I grew up with a different caliber of entertainment. Not to mention my parents are a little bit older than some of my friends, so I was exposed to a plethora of awesome 50s and 60s cinema all but forgotten by even the 40-somethings out there.

These are the titles I saved from new homes tonight, because I still love them:

King Kong vs. Godzilla, together with My Neighbor Totoro solidified my lifelong love of Japanese culture and entertainment.

Journey Back to Oz along with Return to Oz created a new understanding that a story, as a narrative, wasn't limited to the original vision, pretty much the precursors to my interests in fanfic, slash and maybe even my creativity.

Far and Away forever changed the way I looked at kitchen bowls and created an unnecessary attraction to Irish accents. Also it founded my love for the works of Nicole Kidman. No matter how red her hands got.

The Land Before Time...well. Dinosaurs are awesome and can work as a team. Despite their differences. The only thing that would make this better is if there were fucking unicorns prancing around.

I feel like movies, music and even celebrities form an integral part of who we are, especially from our childhood. I think it's really important that we understand the way media shapes us, despite our obsession with being original in today's technological white-out. These things matter. They aren't who we are, but they're a part of us nonetheless.

Recognize.
