I don't have children/grand-children so the question is moot. Still ... I have wondered.
If you were sending your son or daughter out on their own (or you were going out on your own) for the first time, what recipes/ cooking techniques do you think they should have under their belts?
Some of the dishes below may seem very obvious but others may not. Suggestions for new additions are welcome.
Bread/Pastry
1. Basic bread/pizza dough
2. Waffles and Pancakes
3. Pie/tart shell
4. Basic 2 crust fruit pie
5. Muffins
6. Biscuits
7. Crepes
Grains
1. Cooking plain long grain rice, as well as the fancier ones like basmati/jasmine rice
2. Cooking medium grain rice ie Arborio, Carnaroli (risotto)
3. Cooking short grain rice ie Nishiki, Calrose (sushi) ... for the more advanced
4. Cook a pot of pasta
5. Cooking polenta
Meat
1. Oven roast a whole chicken ... spatchcocking can come next
2. Pan fry a chicken or pork cutlet (simple and more complex breading)
3. Pan gravy with drippings
4. Basic chicken stock for soups
5. Quick stock for gravy
6. Chicken noodle soup
Puddings/Custards and other egg based dishes
1. Hard boiled, soft boiled and scrambled eggs
2. Omelettes
3. Quiche/Frittata
4. Vanilla/chocolate pudding
5. Lemon curd
Desserts
1. Chocolate chip cookies
2. Sugar cookies
3. Cupcakes and cakes - vanilla/chocolate
4. Cream puffs
5. Meringues
