Mystery Ingredient and Another Gadget

Today, after dropping off the goodies I had made, as a farewell gift to the people in my physiotherapist's office, I made a quick trip to the International grocery store to pick up a steamer basket for the tamales I'm going to make this week. The collapsible metal contraption I found was smaller than I wanted but with a 'beggar's can't be choosers mindset', I bought it anyway as well as a stand to put it on.

I wandered around and then spotted something I'd ignored on previous visits, way in the back.

This time, I bought it.

It's in this bag which is about 14" long and 10" tall.

Can you guess what's inside?

I'll show you tomorrow.

And so this post has a bit more substance to it, I'm including a picture of a kitchen gadget/baking helper that I got over 25 yrs ago at a food show at the Five Roses flour booth that I attended with my mom and SIL. I call it a 'Push-me, Pull-you' cause I've got a mental block on what it's really called. I don't know how I ended up with all 3 of them.

If you've ever burned the top of your hand on the shelf above when you've reached in to pull out a baking sheet, you'll wish you had one of these. Same thing if you want to push the baking sheet in further.

The triangular notch at the end of the wooden gadget is used to push your baking sheet into the oven while the wedge shaped notch further in is used to hook the edge of the baking sheet and pull it out. And because it's 1/4" thick, I can line up 2 of them on opposite ends of my rolling area and made sure that my cookie dough is exactly 1/4" thick by balancing my rolling pin on them. Simple ... no? And, free. :)
