I have a few treats from my last trip to the market to share with you. I have to admit that this wasn't my favourite assortment as I found that 2 of the items were just too rich for my taste. Still, in moderation, a slice or two can't hurt, right? :)
Deli plate: clockwise starting at the kaiser roll at 1pm are a very rich duck liver sausage, a slice of milky sweet ricotta cheese to off-set the saltiness of the Schinken Mager (German cured ham like prosciutto) next to it, and a chunk of Hungarian hurka which is a water cooked sausage made originally from organ meats such as pork liver, lungs, head meat, rice and onions. Blood is sometimes added but not in this case. Another very rich and heavy sausage not meant for the delicate stomach. Some pickles, cornichons or gherkins would have helped cut through the heaviness unfortunately I don't care for pickled veggies. You can also pan fry or grill it if you prefer.
And, to wash it down, I picked up a couple of different hard ciders from an outlet of the LCBO, conveniently located right across the street from the city market.
I've had the "Magners Original (apple) Irish" cider before and really enjoyed it. It's sweeter than beer but still has an alcoholic "punch" at 4.5% alcohol content so don't be fooled by its innocent sounding resemblance to regular apple cider.
PIC REMOVED: The Swedish "Rekorderlig" is a pear cider flavoured with wild berries and 7% alcohol content. SO good.
And to finish off the post ... dessert.
One of the physiotherapists that I go to is from India and while chatting about some of the Indian dishes I've made I mentioned that I had made gulab jamun. He let me in on THE way that they're served in India ... piping hot in their syrup along with a cold scoop of ice cream. So, of course I had to try it.
Pretty good. :)
