Away we go shopping ... bakery and city market

Now that I'm mobile again, I thought I'd visit 2 places I haven't been to in more than 7 weeks.

The little bakery that's a short distance away ... and then the city market.

I didn't quite make it out as early as I thought and by 2pm when I got to the bakery, most of the buns were gone so from the limited choices left, I bought these 2 kinds.

Buns - Note that the round buns are ~6" in diameter.

And, at the market, I bought a number of goodies including a tri-tip roast that I had the butcher slice 4 steaks from.

Tri-tip roast (>3 pounds for $17) - Four 1/4" steaks removed

I also picked up a number of things from the deli section at my butcher's stall including a light mortadella, liverwurst, caliente (spicy) salami and a half dozen slices of a goat cheese from the Fruilani (north east) region of Italy called Zoncolan di Capra.

Veggies - Brown and white button mushrooms, bok choy, green onion, limes and celeriac (celery root) from a local farm.

I almost left without stopping in at the cheese monger's but as I passed by on my way out, I remembered that I wanted a small wedge of ricotta cheese.

What did I make with some of these goodies?

A very late lunch - I spent 73 cents on the liverwurst and used half of it on one of the buns. Liverwurst was one of my mom's most frequently requested goodies when she was still living here before she went into the assisted living home. None of the Caliente (spicy) salami for her, though she would have liked the light version of mortadella I picked up which has no chunks of fat in it, only ham. A sweet crunchy pear was a nice palate cleanser.

Chicken Parmesan Club Sandwich - with a chicken cutlet from my freezer, bacon I'd baked a couple of days earlier and some of the Zoncolan cheese. The bun was too small for the cutlet (mostly covered by the romaine lettuce and bacon) and kept tipping over. It took a lot of effort to balance it for the shot so I stopped fussing with the composition and just snapped a picture. :)

Shooter's Sandwich for One - This sandwich was inspired by Charles of FiveEuroFood. I ended up cutting it into 6 wedges and ate the whole thing ... though it could have been shared by two people along with a soup and a bit of salad.
