[Oh, the last several days have been unreasonably taxing. The concept has niggled at him since the night Coyolxauhqui last visited him, and has merely intensified upon seeing some of the new arrivals. Cue strange forays into topics such as genealogy, crests, traditions over any number of planets, clan behaviour, morphic resonance and the like, ( Read more... )

[He isn't about to call attention to that. In fact, he'll proceed with caution, as if addressing a skittish animal... though not really so patronising.]

In my reality, there are machines, called cameras, which one may point in any direction and capture an image of whatever lies before them. Most beings who use these devices prefer to capture images of other beings, for posterity and preservation of fond memories. These images are transferred to special bits of paper called photographs. I've got a few, if you'd like to see them. I've likely got a camera as well.

An image of anything. So you could see images of places without being there yourself. Perhaps without a person being there at all.

[Camera is totally a washing machine robot with magic inside of it built by a gnome now.]

To an extent. A person would have to be there to operate the camera, but the image they capture can, and often does, exclude them, to give the illusion of being devoid of sentient life if there are no others in the frame.

Oh.

[Damn. He was hoping one could tell the camera to go into places and survey without putting troops at risk, or keep a place watched without a guard.]

But you can show images to those who had never been to the place where the camera was.

[It's a good thing Arthas does not yet know about security cameras.]

Indeed you can. For some, it is the only way they can communicate.

What, are they mute? That doesn't seem very efficient.

Perhaps not to you. Do remember that yours is not the only world, and those you see here are not the only physical templates of sentience.

I've been to worlds comprised completely of thoughts, and worlds where the inhabitants were nothing more than vibrations or colours. There are species with sight and no hearing, so that a written language is hardly efficient for them.

Those....do not concern me. How can they?

Then it should be one to you whether or not their modes of communication are efficient, and not worth the observation. Your own means of it aren't being limited, after all.
