[Oh, the last several days have been unreasonably taxing. The concept has niggled at him since the night Coyolxauhqui last visited him, and has merely intensified upon seeing some of the new arrivals. Cue strange forays into topics such as genealogy, crests, traditions over any number of planets, clan behaviour, morphic resonance and the like, all across the library. When he talks now, he sounds as if he's a few days overdue for a sleep cycle, but he doesn't seem terribly upset. Just wool-gathering.]
Family seems a universal concept, doesn't it, in one form or another. Be it through blood, loyalty, simple camaraderie, or necessity. For some, it doesn't really need to be organic, or even sentient. I knew a man who considered the inventions in his laboratory to be his family. Another whose family was simply his team of sled dogs--before it became a sport, of course. It's merely a unit... [And here, a faint chuckle.] Of beings, or things, that bring about a sense of solidarity, trust and usually comfort. A measure of equilibrium.
[He goes quiet for several seconds, his silence breached only by the whisper of a turning page.]
Peri once asked me if I had family photographs. The only thing I could think to tell her was that Time itself isn't tremendously photogenic. It made sense to me that day, at least.
...Perhaps I ought to begin keeping photographs.
