Birthday Loot

Sep 23, 2010 20:20

I had a birthday covered in awesomesauce. Really. Half day at work. Half day soaking at the nekkid spa. Got my toes done. Baked my back. Ate Korean food. Nice. Then came home and wrote some background stuff with Sim for our new story.

My daughter had made me a chocolate cake on Monday, and we had burgers from the local shop for dinner. I love no-cook birthdays!

But the best part (aside from the homemade card my son gave me that made me weepy) was the loot. Yeah, I know, materialism is for twinkies ... but this wasn't any ol' loot. This was BOOKS!! They were even used books. Which, I gotta say, I don't mind at all, even as a prezzie.

Here's what's new on my shelf:

Ten Plus One (an 87th Precinct Mystery), by Ed McBain. What I didn't realize is this is like the gazillionth 87th Precinct Mystery Mr. McBain wrote. So now I'm looking for the first one. However, BEST opening for a hard-boil procedural mystery evar. I'm hooked.

Adventures in the Screen Trade, by William Goldman. Movies. Goldman. What could be better?

Mystic River and Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane. I've always wanted to read Mystic River, and when I realized the guy who wrote the book for it also wrote Shutter Island, that clinched it. Woot!

The Passage, by Justin Cronin. I read the opening on one of my publication blogs and was hooked.

I am now back up to having waaaaaay too many books to read, but that's a pretty happy embarrassment of riches. My life, she iz goot.

birthday, books
