itsy bitsy spider

There is possibly THE largest spider (other than a tarantula I saw in Cozumel) I have ever seen in person camped out on the wall next to my bed. I looked up spiders online and I don't think it is any of the 4 poisonous ones that live in the US. But, it is giant. And very aggressive looking. Like the type of spiders that hunt rather than spin webs. ( Read more... )

lb, yikes

Really? I'm always like, if I smash and miss, I'm in trouble cause it may get away and then come back and get me!!! You sound way more practical than me. :) This one would leave a nasty stain on wall or carpet tho... it was BIG. :P

But... I just got back from a successful capture and release mission. The spider walked down onto the carpet and I was able to capture her in a glass, then slip paper under her and carry her outdoors. I put her across the cul de sac from my house, lol!!! :) Deliberately NOT in my back yard! (I'm such a wussie!)

I think she was a wolf spider. Maybe.
(Though I read this great web page about identifying spiders and they were like -- "Forget it! You know nothing! Don't even pretend you know the smallest thing about spiders! You need a dozen books and microscopes and a PhD! AMATEUR!" I thought that was hilarious.)

loooove the icon :)

Just so you know we get alot of spiders from other countries here from importing produce. When I volunteered at the zoo, they were sending someone over to Wegman's a few times a year to get black window spiders that would come in on fruit.

So your big boy may not have been from around here.

Uuuuuummmm... that doesn't make me as happy for a lot of reasons. But especially now cause I set her freeeeeee. And I'm kinda sorta sure (i.e., not really (AMATEUR!)) that it was a female from what I read online. So, even though I didn't notice an egg sac or anything, I could have put some crazy Borg spider species out in the land to assimilate the other spiders. :(

But, I'm also glad you told me this AFTER I did my capture! =)

It def wasn't a black widow though. Wrong body shape. Looked way more like a scaled back tarantula, which is why I'm thinking "wolf spider" though WHICH KIND of them, no clue there. Had stripes on the legs and was mostly dark. :P CLUELESS... :)

We use a hand-vac dust buster here in insect land ... works great. Of course, Jacob is the 'squish first, quantify later' type of kid.
