Oh, Jump Street, yes. If I weren't so tired I'd reminisce.
Speaking of which, what the - *reviews stage directions* - do I have a Scottish person, like, asleep in my lap now? Is that the deal? *looks both ways* *pets*
why haven't i relpied to any of my comments? i thought i had, but apparently not. when you're less tired (like, next year, poor joan) i wish to hear the reminiscences. how did i miss this in the 80s? was i too busy Not Liking Wham (i mean, i like them now but when i was strange tomboyish teen? i was strongly opposed.) and falling over in rollerboots or something?
and, um, yes, you can choose to interpret it that way... *shifty*
21 Jump St. reminiscences. Well, the theme tune went "21 Jump -- -- Street." I used to think Johnny Depp was really cute and I had a picture of him and would squeal about him with a friend of mine. He provided a lot of support for the misleading, but at the time very comforting, "So I'm NOT gay!" theory that helped a lot during junior high and high school. I liked Ioki (sp?) too, and Hoff and the boss fella
( ... )
Ooooo actual reminiscences. It's like a historical record. ::is enthralled::
I was too young to have watched it first run, and later on I just knew that it existed, the basic premise, and that it starred Johnny Depp. Hmm, why *did* I start downloading it? I suspect there is a jekesta to blame.
Yes the prostitute ep with the constant raping was very dark. I really admired them for going there with that ep.
And the ep with Ioki was in Vietnam during the WAR. He's growing up in Vietnam and watching all this old American TV and getting bombed all the time and OMG SAD
Oh, Vietnam, okay. My history is fuzzy *hides degree with great shame* I mainly remember being confused because I didn't think he looked old enough to have been in any of the wars and/or police actions that I'd heard about. Or, alternatively, he looked too old as a child. Oh, you know what I mean.
Oh and then Ioki has to pretend to be Japanese and change his name to become a cop because of all the discrimination against Vietnamese.
And there was an ep where Doug totally ruined this one guy's life because of false accusations of child molestation. And an ep where Hanson's girlfriend gets murdered.
There was a lot of dark stuff, yeah. But there is also a lot of FUN YAY.
Like Hoffs being Officer Milk Carton! And and and all the gayness! And Ioki's inherent Asian ninja skillz. And dress up! Playacting! Crossdressing! Cute cute childhood flashbacks! Every member of the DeLuise clan ever! And everyone being FULL OF LOVE for each other. And Hanson being a giant dork slowly metamorphosizing into an emo poser. (It's cool to see that you thought Depp himself was an emo poser at the time, too.)

Oh, that's an interesting way to put it. I guess - at the time, I had no other frame of reference for Johnny Depp, he hadn't been in any movies or anything. All I knew was Hanson. So when he started changing, sort of deliberately frustrating expectations it seemed to me, that's when I first became aware of the actor as distinct from the character. But now that you mention it, wouldn't it have been more natural to take any changes as character development? I can't remember where I got that idea that it was Depp deciding he was Too Cool for Tiger Beat kind of thing.
No no, I think you're right. There's been much discussion about Depp's behavior on the set in later years.
It does seem to me that Depp stopped acting Hanson the character so much. I think part of the character changes were his own personality coming through, and part of it was the producers or whoever wanting to make Hanson less of a dork and more appealing as a teen idol.
it's weird how it seems to have totally bypassed me in the 80s. i'm fairly sure it did air in the uk, but i can't remember anyone ever talking about it, even in those "did you ever see...?" conversations you find yourself having more and more as you get older. maybe it only had one run here or something? alternatively, the serious episodes content had my mum turning the telly off before we ever saw it. but, oh, baby depp! i'm not sure that i've ever found him attractive in a 'wish to sleep with way', but he's so pretty to just look at. (though i have some issues with the ripped denim. it's the 21st century, you need to stop that stuff right now j.)
(had more to say, but sleep just demanded i go to bed this instant. be glad!)
teasing? tsk! *tiny chop-sockey motions at the teasers* and, possibly, pinkness. depending on how accurately i am understanding you.
Hm, that is odd. Well - wasn't there - have no theories.
Oh, chop-sockey not necessary, it was no big thing and I brought it on myself, anyway (long day, fizzy wine, careless remark.) Pinkness might possibly be slightly more called for, but I don't think you need to worry about your reputation or anything, uh, look! turtles!
