I think it's safe to say it doesn't make the disabilities the focus of why they're on screen, and doesn't play on it for cheap emotions - they're there to play a part, and the story is what matters. They're not portrayed as worse off because of it in day to day life.
It also deals with how people were portrayed in that era, and how they reacted in a very sensitive manner (this is one of the reasons Bree Walker asked to be involved, I believe - along with the fact they didn't actually have a "Lobster Girl" on the cast.
