two weeks into my summer job, & i can say with some certainty that i like it. love it, not yet, but maybe i'll end up there. to start from the beginning, i'm a social services assistant for the local food bank, under the programs & clients section (which consists of uh, one other person). but that's just office lingo for "summer-student-who-does-crap-we-don't-want-to-do." duh. stuffing envelopes, alphabetizing things, photocopying, faxing, moving things...you name it. but whatever keeps them happy, & whatever gives me something to do during my 8-hour day, is fine by me.
still, it's quite an eye-opening environment to work in. the food bank serves low-income/disabled ppl who cannot afford to get food with their own money all the time. as university students, we're somewhat sheltered & don't come into contact with such ppl often. sure, we know that there are poor ppl who go hungry & whatnot, but to actually witness this type of poverty everyday is another story. okay, i admit that a part of me thought that only lazy/drugged out ppl who can't get their asses to work turn to food banks, but as it turns out, this is far from the truth. almost 50% of the food bank users are children/infants. and parents don't consciously choose not to feed their children. so yes...this be the end of my little PSA spiel. XD
for whatever reason, work yesterday was super happening. i hardly spent any time at my desk! and some days i'm sitting there for hours on end answering the dreaded phone (something i absolutely hate doing). anyway, went on 3 mini field trips yesterday:
1. to pack Harvest Boxes - basically packing local produce from farmers to send out to ppl. it was like assembly line style, & i was in charge of tomatoes. haha. then i got to ride in one of those HUGE delivery trucks while we went around delivering them to community centres. it felt like sitting up in the front seat for the first time lol. tres exciting.
2. to a personal safety talk at the police station. as you can imagine, the food bank is located at this really sketchy area notorious for drugs etc. my mom was srsly freaked out the first time she drove me there, & she insists i'd get attacked cos i take public transport there at 7.30am. but so far, so good. a little common sense goes a long way, says i.
3. now here's the big one...at the end of the already-eventful day, my boss decided we needed size 4 diapers ASAP (cos we give those out too), so she sent me to Toys R Us to buy some. read: I DROVE TO TOYS R US. TO GET DIAPERS. ALONE. and note, i had previously NEVER driven alone before, not even around my neighborhood. sooooooo, i was more than a little freaked out & had several back-to-back hart attaks. hopefully they were not too noticeable to everyone at the office. O_o my boss asked with some hesitation if i wanted to drive the van. UMM...how about no way in hell? the girl who offered to let me drive her car said it didn't matter if i crashed it cos her insurance would cover 100% or something. um, thanks. but i got there & back alive & everything was fine & dandy. YAYE! i thought it was quite amusing that i bought 400$ worth of diapers (with 20 gift cards) though, & cleaned out their stock of size 4. LOL.
so that was my exciting day yesterday. on the other hand, today was boring as hell. i woke up late, missed the bus, got there half an hour late, & spent the afternoon doing a crossword. the most exciting thing that happened was a power outage that lasted for half an hour. go figure. oh btw, i am truly sorry for referring to ev0l!woman (new temporary code name: SYRINGE) as such before, because she is actually very nice. FORGIVE ME, I REPENT! :( thus i will not be collecting needles & condoms off the floor for her pressie at the end of summer. XD
to end off...couple of pictures of Joanie from ANTM6. omgah. one of the best girls from one of the best cycles. truly hilarious. <333!
PS. elephants are part of the dinosaur family. XD
werk it, girl!
