Okay. Updates are not happening, precisely, and besides, I've been wanting to do this for awhile, so I'm going to rec a few of my favourite one-shot fanfics. :)
Title:
Not Quite ClosureAuthor: PepsiAngel
Summary: Ginny goes to the Yule Ball. Neville steps on her toes. Harry ignores her. Is the boy hitting on her at the butterbeer bowl a charming young youth or an agent of the Dark Lord? And who the hell would find Ron attractive, anyway?
Excerpt: The way he explained himself, after backing away slowly with a look of pure terror on his face, was that he had been “interested” in me for quite some time. He thought the Yule Ball would be the ideal place to confess to me that he found my laugh irresistible and longed to run his fingers through my hair. I kid you not. I replied that I did not think there was ever an appropriate time to tell a person something like that and I could pretty much guarantee it would scare me, no matter the setting.
She Rambles: I am absolutely in love with this fic. PepsiAngel has this alarming ability to make everything she writes amusing on all different levels. Wry wit, side-splitting laughter, she does it all. She also, in my humble opinion, writes post-OotP Ginny absolutely perfectly. I'm particularly fond of her characterization of Michael Corner in this one.
Title:
Remus LupinAuthor: Twix
Summary: Set the summer after Goblet of Fire, this is a character portrait of Remus Lupin from the point of view of a ten year old little girl who lives near him.
Excerpt: The next few days, I remember very distinctly. Remus had changed, now that the dog was here. He seemed so much happier; he smiled more and as he was making tea, he would hum under his breath. After tea, he would sit on the bed with a book and Padfoot would be with him, his head in Remus's lap. Remus always seemed to have a hand on the dog; whether it be scratching behind his ears or laying his hand on his back while reading. I wish I could have joined in on Remus's happy mood, but I couldn't. Something was bothering me and I was starting to not trust Remus.
She Rambles: This is an absolutely gorgeous piece. There's a very worn, simple sort of beauty to it, and it really captures Remus Lupin's character so well. In addition, Audrey (the original character) is wonderfully developed, a rarity with OCs. The entire thing is just melancholy and beautiful, and absolutely a worthwhile read. Caution: tissues may be necessary.
Title:
Beautiful BirdAuthor: Cashelle-gone-Crazy
Summary: Fred and George decide to give Ron a love potion in hopes that it'll finally get his relationship with Hermione progressing. Unfortunately, Ron falls for something else. Emphasis on the 'thing.'
Excerpt: Upon entering the room Harry saw Hedwig sitting on his bed with a letter in her beak.
“Hedwig! What’s that you got? A letter? I wonder who from…” Harry walked over to her and took the letter. He looked over at Ron to tell him that it was a just a blank piece of parchment and noticed a peculiar look on his face.
“Ron?” he asked cautiously. Ron walked over to Hedwig and started stroking her feathers.
“What a beautiful bird, such a lovely bird. Hedwig, how are you my love?” he asked stroking her feathers. A look of horror attached itself to Harry’s face.
“Ron, you need to step away from my bird. As in right now.”
She Rambles: What can I say? This girl has an incredible knack for throwing a bit of completely bizarre humour into the HP-universe, and still managing to keep everyone delightfully in-character. This one's absolutely hilarious. If you're still intrigued afterwards, you might want to check out Their Crazy Love. Because . . . Harry and Dumbledore? Theirloveissocanon.
Title:
HeatAuthor: Shadow Phantom
Summary: Post OotP. A Harry character piece during his stay at the Dursley's.
Excerpt: Lupin sent him a letter. It was long, and emotional, and Harry could hardly dare to open it, to read it. He keeps it tucked under the floor, and sometimes reads it at night. Lets the words wash over him. A security blanket. A guarantee. He isn’t alone.
She Rambles: This is honestly one of the most gorgeous Harry Potter fics I've ever read. It's just so haunting and it almost aches to read -- the pain that Harry's going through is conveyed perfectly. Every line is hypnotic and perfectly crafted, and it's just absolutely beautiful. I don't even know quite how to describe it.
