Hello friends,
It's been a long time since I've written in this. (I wonder why I use the preposition "in," seeing as how this is virtual.) I have to write an essay a week for creative nonfiction so that's probably part of the reason why. This will be my 4th week of school and that means next week is midterms. OY. Let's see, what has happened...

Um, my computer broke and was gone for 10 days but is now okay and has a brand new hard drive. I had Rosh Hashanah dinner with Ari's cool grandparents at their country club in Highland Park. I bought some leather boots that are the most expensive things I've ever bought (and then I rubbed them with mink oil and buffed them with a horsehair brush). I finished watching the last season of Six Feet Under and cried some. I've begun waking up early and taking walks along Lake Michigan-it's nice, probably not when it gets cold, though. I can read Middle English now, which is a good skill I think, and I can read it aloud, too. I had a great conversation with my Ghost Stories professor about Calvino and Invisible Cities and what it means to wander into the world of the dead and think it's still the living's. (Or is it???) This was cool because that professor is Stuart Dybek, greatest living Chicago writer, and now he is my friend.

My dad won Iowa Inventor of the Year and I'm going back to Iowa this weekend to attend his banquet. (I like telling people this because they get all excited, like "whoa, what did your Dad invent?" and then I crush their dreams of toaster strudel and the Magic Bullet by saying "lead-free solder.") I'm making some new friends which is good because all of my best friends are abroad right now. Particularly some people in creative nonfiction I've targeted as friend projects, I think we all get along together and I'm excited for the poets vs. fiction writers vs. nonfiction writers bowl-off. I went to a lit magazine party on Friday where we screenprinted and then I guzzled (yeah, I think guzzled is the right word) red wine. Last night I watched Brick and tonight I watched The Science of Sleep, so I feel full of good movies and visually satisfied. I went apple picking today in Indiana which was nice. I find that the more I explore Chicago the more I like it. Maybe I'll live here for a year after school?

Anyway, it would be nice if there were some more things in my life, but for now this is alright, this mostly quiet and thoughtful period. I looked at myself in the mirror the other day and had the immediate reaction, "Oh! I look like myself again!" I think it might be because the way my hair looks right now and because I've lost a little bit of weight, but I'm wondering if it's something else as well. It sort of feels like the past two years never existed, and it's strange that this subconscious sense could be manifested in my physical self, that I could appear the way I feel.

Hope you're all well.
