...a punk opera of revenge unfolds."
I've been mentioning this in the past two posts, so now it's time to write about it. Such a great anime series deserves its own post.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is an anime series based on Alexandre Dumas' book, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. I've never read the book so I am unsure how close the adaptation is. One thing I'm sure of is that it's definitely NOT 90% close to the book. I think it's s safe to say that UFOs, space colonies, and lunar carnivals inhabited the realm of the fantastic in Dumas' days.
A brief synopsis of the anime (courtesy of
http://www.animeau.org/news.php):
Born into an aristocratic family in Paris, Albert sets out on a journey with his best friend, Franz, to escape his privileged yet dull life. They travel to Luna, which is on the surface of the moon, and meet a very wealthy man named The Count of Monte Cristo. Becoming completely fascinated with The Count's mysterious charm, Albert welcomes him into Paris high society. But soon Albert will discover the Count's true motive - revenge...
And so goes the opening spiels:
Have you ever betrayed someone?
Is there a love you would do anything to obtain, even if you had to steal it?
Have you ever hated a friend to the point where you could kill him?
Is there a "truth" that you can tell no one about?
Do you know the "true identity" of those closest to you?
