Book Club With The Author
Tonight we had a very cool and very different sort of bookclub.
bakerandchef won a silent auction for a book club with author Jack O'Connell. Mr. O'Connell is a Worcester boy through and through.
We were all a little nervous about meeting with the author because, while I think most of us enjoyed the book,(
The Resurrectionist); the book was a bit freaky. It was normal enough through the first 2/3 then got a bit odd. I won't post a spoiler here as to what it was, but it made us all want to give the author a hug.
It was really interesting to hear what his writing process was. He was extremely down to earth and extremely easy to talk to. He talked of his influences and his life growing up in Worcester. He explained where some of the strangeness came from. He explained where his inspiration came from. It was enlightening.
We discussed where the title came from. We discussed the parallel story lines. We discussed whether the symbolism that seemed apparent was intentional or if it was just the reader's interpretation of it all.
We touched on the term Limbo.
We talked about a bunch of other things including how books get made into movies. It was extremely interesting.
Amy Walsh (no relation, though she loves flamingoes and has a son named Jamie) was our hostess and she was fabulous. She offered "snacks" and had I known her definition of "snacks" was on par with mine, I would have skipped dinner. :)
Andrew added a lot of insight to the meeting. He's the only one that had read one of Mr. O'Connell's other books, which I 'm told are more Sci-Fi in nature.
lcmed and
nick_44 were greatly missed.
It was a great meeting and completely different from our usual meetings in a good way.
I'm totally going to pass the book along to
dshute I think it's something he might enjoy.
