Getting back in touch with my nerd side...

Mar 22, 2006 12:01

It seems like I've had a good couple months of heavy social interaction.  Between a variety of gatherings, the Tahoe trip, swing classes and regular social nights, I've just spent a lot of time gabbing and drinking and, you know, socializing.  It always takes a little effort, a little extra energy, a conscious decision to be social, though.  For some reason these social interactions can quickly bring me to a "saturation point" of sorts.  After too much time at a big noisy party or too many nights of being out, I have to spend a few nights completely to myself.  Maybe it's because I was an only child and am, therefore, too comfortable on my own, but I find that I have a natural tendency to stay at home and watch documentaries or geek out all by myself unless I actually motivate and remind myself why it's fun to go out and be with friends.  I'm somewhat embarassed by this tendency of mine even though I suspect there are many people like me in this broader circle of friends.  It just makes me feel like I'm lazy and unsocial and the past few years have been a dedicated fight against these particular traits.
Anyway, this brings me to my present situation.  For whatever reason my nerd side is reasserting itself rather strongly lately.  I'm finding I have a marked disinterest in just going out and mixing.  I still do it but I'm having to talk myself into it more.  Like, if I go out to dinner, the thought of calling someone to join me is almost alien.  I usually prefer to take a book with me and eat by myself.  This is something I do quite often.  Also, I'm starting to get back into big projects on my computer, something I haven't really done in years.  Example:  I guess Sunday was a beautiful day in San Luis but I wouldn't know.  You see, I spent the whole day inside- reformatting, updating and installing a dual-boot system on my computer with Ubuntu and WindowsXP.  Yep, I finally took the Linux plunge and damned if I haven't been totally fascinated with tweaking it so it works just as smoothly as the Windows side.  I also recently purchased a small plot of land in Second Life and occasionally log in there to teach myself how to create objects and script their behavior in LSL.  It's all very geeky and time-consuming but I've been enjoying it.
So, that's just a little update on my mental state.  Don't worry, I'm not going to become a total hermit.  I'm not going to stop going out on Thursdays.  I'm just...less interested in going out for the hell of it right now.  Mostly, I guess I'm seeking to explain myself because I want people to understand what I'm really like.  I want people to know that I'm often tempted to be a hermit and that they shouldn't feel snubbed if they haven't heard from me in a while.  To all my friends out there, you do brighten my life.  I do enjoy my time with you.  Sometimes I just require a lot of time to myself.
Don't worry, it's not a "depression" thing.  I promise.  :)
