A city is completely different than a compound ran by a guy charged a few years earlier. I actually think it was totally fake and that she wasn't even there, especially since she called from a land phone and to my knowledge, there were no land phones in the entire compound. Who even knows. I think it was definitely handled in the wrong manner though.
Its more of a moral issue is all. Should children be brought up to believe in polygamy/polyandry or should they be able to make that choice for themselves? There were so many reports of child abuse before this and there were so many violations of the Mann Act. So, if the child abuse is so widespread and so common why shouldn't the entire population of children be evacuated?
This particular instance IS about religion, obviously, but we should also be aware that we live in a nation where women still ARE considered chattel, by religious extremists. Women and girls are raped and abused every single day, outside the confines of any church; I think in this case, the sheer numbers of females involved is staggering, and it very obviously HAD to happen. And honestly, they really did have a choice to leave. They have a greater chance of retaliation by leaving than by staying. If they weren't abused, then they should have no reason not to stay.
But I do think we are doing ourselves, a grave disservice by making this issue completely about religion. Just my take on it, though. If it was a Catholic polygamist compound or a Buddhist compound would you still feel the same? I certainly wouldn't be opposed to clearing out an abusive agnostic polygamist compound.
i disagree. Polygamy is something they believe God wants them to do. Its built into their entire lives, and though i dont agree with it, i completely understand it. They are being faithful to what they believe is right. I think one of the most important things about this country is the absolute freedom of religion. I dont believe anyone has any right to persecute a group of people for their belief.
i think their are a lot of underlying issues for why they raided the compound. I think people are afraid of something that they dont really know about. I feel like people have blown it out of proportion. when you think about it, the only people who have said that their is abuse going on are the few women who have left the compound because they were abused. And while yes its terrible that they were, im not sure if I believe its as bad as they tell us. I just dont think its completely wise to base our views on only biased peoples testimonies.I dont believe there is as much abuse as these people tell us. Family is the number one most important thing to these people. I know this because their beliefs are quite similar to mine, after all they are a break off group from the LDS church. For them to abuse their children would be contradictory to what they believe.
