Summary: In his final moments, he couldn’t help as his mind wandered back to the Silent Hero once more.

There was that smirk again. The bastard standing there with the Replica, just daring him to attempt to fight. Zexion was no fool. He knew that fighting back was useless. Should he somehow, miraculously, defeat the Replica, there was still Axel to deal with. It was an impossible task. The elder Nobody calculated his chances for survival at slim to none. He took a step back, wanting to prolong his life as long as possible.

“Axel… what are you doing?” he demanded.

“You can’t be that ignorant,” Axel’s smirk widened as he spoke. If Zexion didn’t know any better, he would say Axel was enjoying this. “It should be obvious by now.”

Bastard. How could he turn on the Organization like this? What was there to gain? There were so many things that Zexion could say, but for once in his entire existence, he was silent. His mind floated back to some of the other members. Xaldin, Vexen… Lexaeus. He hadn’t been able to survive with brains and muscle. Why had Zexion fooled himself into believing he could do it on manipulation alone? Lexaeus had called him a foolish child. Perhaps he had been right.

“Cat got your tongue?” Axel asked mockingly. “It’s about time.” That’s when the Replica charged at him. Zexion summoned a portal back to his room in The World That Never Was just in time, but he knew it wouldn’t be too long before Axel appeared as well. He sighed and sat down in a chair to wait. It was over and he knew it. Again, his mind turned to Lexaeus. He would have fought. He would act as the hero he was until the bitter end-he already had. Perhaps Castle Oblivion had lived up to its name.

Damn Marluxia! Damn Axel and Larxene! Damn them all to hell! He could easily run to a senior member… but what would Lexaeus have done? Stood his ground back when first confronted by Axel, that’s what. He never would have fled in the first place. How pathetic was he to simply draw out his life when he knew it would end soon after?

He felt a presence behind him. He would not flee this time.

“Sneaky little weasel, aren’t you?” Axel asked. Zexion sighed and stood, awaiting his fate. In his final moments, he couldn’t help as his mind wandered back to the Silent Hero once more. Had he loved him? Was he capable of love after all and just didn’t know it? Perhaps that admiration and respect gave way to some type of feeling. Now, as the Replica charged at him, he figured he would never know.

-------------------------------------

There was one are of the castle that seemed to have color in it. The doorways leading to the member’s rooms. Xaldin stood in front of them, glancing around with a sigh. Vexen, Lexaeus and Larxene all perished because of some boy. No… the boy. The one who could help them. Suddenly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw another blue doorway slowly change to red. Zexion’s.

“Hey, there you are!” Xigbar had appeared behind him, but Xaldin paid him no mind for the moment. “Superior’s been looking all over for you and trust me, he’s as…”

“Quiet,” Xaldin commanded. Xigbar stopped talking, though it was more due to surprise than anything else. However, Xaldin took the moment to point and continue. “I don’t think many of us will survive long enough to obtain these hearts we desire.” Xigbar followed Xaldin’s gaze and shook his head.

“No. Probably not.” The two of them stole one more glance at the faded doorways before turning to rejoin their Superior, awaiting orders for their next move.
