Title: Apatheia
Author: Kagome
Rating: PG
Challenge: None
Characters/Pairings: Focuses on Light, hints of Light/L if you tilt your head and squint.
Warnings: Angst, spoilers.
Word Count: 246
Notes: Do not read if you haven’t seen up to episode 25 of the anime. I’ve never written anything Death Note before, so please be gentle. XD This is what happens when I should be studying for my final (last exam ever) of nursing school. I am a JRock writer, not an anime writer, though I have written both anime- and House MD-related fanfic.
If he closes his eyes, he thinks he can almost hear the sound of a chain rattle. If he closes his eyes, he thinks he can almost smell the scent of too-sweet hot tea. If he closes his eyes, he thinks he can almost taste the flavor of chocolate cake. If he closes his eyes, he thinks he can almost feel the sensation of gentle hands on his legs and feet.
If he opens his eyes, he thinks that he can almost see a mop of unruly black hair at the very edge of his vision.
In reality, he only hears the clacking of the keys as he types. He only smells the lingering scent of Misa’s perfume (he isn’t fond of it, either). He only tastes something akin to bitterness and he blames it on the coffee he’d had earlier. He only feels the keyboard beneath his hands, the chair that he is currently sitting in, and the floor underneath his feet.
He only sees the monitor in front of him, and from the corners of his eyes, the walls that surround him.
Kira does not feel such emotions as sadness and regret. Kira does not feel guilt over what he has done. Kira does not mourn the passing of Ryuzaki-of L, who was his enemy and certainly not his friend.
Kira does not miss L; he does not wish that the other man were still here.
But maybe, just maybe, Light Yagami does.

‘Apatheia’ is Greek, in case you didn’t know. ^_^ It’s where we derive ‘apathy’ from. It basically means “without feeling”. I figured it was a proper title.
