So I'm lazy. Scratch that, I'm unmotivated. I'm dedicated and responsible when others ask me to do something, but when it comes to self-propulsion, I tend to peter out pretty quickly once the going gets rough. Take for example: playing the guitar, skateboarding, exercise (running, lifting weights, stretching), vegetarianism, maybe computer ( Read more... )

I agree about the professors. Purdue does have some fine philosophy professors, but the program is underfunded and very limited because of that. I think I let other people's thoughts on my degree kinda wear on me too. It's one of those degrees you have to defend. It's nice though, because unlike other similarly perceived degrees, earning a philosophy degree is kind of training for arguing with people about things like that anyway... or something. I just spent way too long trying to figure out how to word that and no matter how I did it it never came out right.

You could do law, use the law degree as your ticket any and everywhere. Though, I do think you could be a good professor.

Going to the Muhammad Ali Scholars meeting w/ Victoria (congrats to her for getting the Muhammad Ali scholarship!) was very inspiring though, and makes me want to do some good, and see the results of it. There are some wonderful people involved with it.

Newt, Florida has a good law school. I thought you may want to know that. I am actually taking a law class this semester (Natural Resources Law to be exact) and it has been a real eye opener. I have actually found out that law students are not necessarily the cream of the crop and although many are very intelligent. I'm just as smart or smarter than 75% of that class. I could give a brief on a case, and it would be just as good as a law student could do. The bottom line here is to be what you want to be is want you need to do. Those law students are not there because they think they are too smart for regular society, they are there because that is what they want to do and what they want to become ( ... )

Victoria doesn't so much do work with the homeless, though she did volunteer in Baton Rouge after Katrina. Her dad's a demolition contractor and when she was 10 or so years old, she would go into buildings he was gutting and draw up plans for how it could be a homeless shelter. Right now, she's doing much more (or trying to do much more) with the Harrison County Animal Shelter. It's a brand new shelter and the commissioner of Harrison County ran with building it as one of his campaign promises, but, though he did build it once he became commissioner, he just left it underfunded and understaffed. She's working on marketing for it, raising funds and raising adoptions ( ... )

It sounds like you've got a great plan right there. I'm at the point of my degree where I'm sick of working hard. I just took a huge cut in work and am now be more lazy. I wish working hard was an option. But my advisor could never comply with my needs for funding me to go to school. Right now I'm looking forward to finishing, probably in May.

i feel ya. i get all too caught up in where i am all the time. what am i doing that makes any kind of difference? am i challenging myself to any degree that i will benifit from? who knows. i always feel lazy and unmotivated and then a year down the road i realize how much i have changed, and there is a lot to be said for personal growth. but i have yet to find my drive in life as far as any of that goes. and then i wonder if it will ever come to me. i have experienced life through it just falling in my lap. rarely have i really went out to discover anything. i have travelled all over, but the only time i really worked for it was when i had victoria next to me kicking me in the butt to make it happen. thank god for her. i have no real advice, but i wanted to let you know you aren't alone here. if you find the answer (other than the military) let me know.

The military's not for me, not so long as we have ideological imperialists in the White House.
