Dear Lucy,
Keep working hard in school. It really is going to pay off later on. You're going to be a doctor. It's what you've always dreamed of. Here are a few pointers to make sure you get through it all alright. Take care of mom, you mean the world to her. Dad's gone. He's never coming back. You don't need to blame him for anything. You and mom will do just fine. Try weaning off the ritalin again. I know your grades slipped the last time you tried it, but trust me, it's something that needs to be done. You can't take it forever. You liked San Fransisco alot, but you'll learn it's not the place for you. You'll love it in Chicago. You'll get to work at COunty General. It's going to feel weird at first, almost like you'll never fit in, but you will Lucy, stay the course. Dr. Carter is going to be your resident. He's gonna be a total hardass at first, but he'll warm up to you. But first, practice doing your IV's all you can when you have some free time. Don't date that scumbag Dale. You'll assume correctly that he's looking at you're behind when your back is turned.
Dr. Weaver's not going to be able to be our mentor, she's going to be Chief of the ER, and have much bigger things to deal with. but that doesn't mean that you can't learn from her. When you get a chart that has 'Paul Sobriki' on the top, take a deep breath, and make sure you tell Carter EVERY last detail. Take charge, or else you will find yourself in a morass deeper than you ever imagined. But if that's how things turn out for you, you must have faith. You'll have a team of Chicago's finest doctors with you every step of the way. When it's over, don't let Carter blame himself. it's neither of your faults. After all of that, it'll be perfectly understandable if you change your mind about working in psych.
Treasure every moment you have with Dr. Greene. He'll save your life, Lucy, soon after, you're going to have to make sure you can make the end of his as comfortable as possible. It's going to be very hard working without him, but he won't b forgotten.
As hard as it is to imagine, Carter won't be there forever. Go to his goodbye party at Ike's, and don't leave him alone with some orderly who's there for the free food.
Good luck Lucy.
Sincerely,
Lucy Knight, M.D
