the fires from here, my job picking cherries.

last night when the sun set over the okanagan lake it was blood red, and casting this brilliant red glow out over the water. we can see the smoke pouring out from over the hills, and as of yesterday it's very lightly raining ash.

as of now, well, it's raining raining, and windy and booming thunder. i'm in town at the moment - some of us from the orchard came in for a supply run. six of us piled in the back of someone's van, and we picked up a few french canadian hitchhikers along the way - damp, walking, after an unsuccessful search for work out my way.

i acutally really like picking cherries. we get out to the orchard at five, just as it's getting light, and it's still cool and calm. you can see the lake from where our trees are, it's just beautiful. i'm starting slow, but i'll get better with practice. got to get more quick and nimble with the fingers. and better with manuvering the ladder through the branches. i ALMOST fell yesterday, serious! i was at the top of my twelve foot ladder picking from the top of a tree, and i was eyeing this one last patch i had to get - a pretty long reach, but i figured i'd go for it anyhow. bad idea. i started tipping and had to cling to the top of the tree for support. broke a branch or two, and someone had to reset the ladder for me. it was a good lesson, i suppose! easy now. we're all paired up, two of us sharing a row of trees, and i got paired with a nice guy from east van who likes all the same music as me. it's sweet, i've got portable speakers i bring out to the orchard with me.

in short, i love my job. not making that much money, but it's really okay.

oh, and yaara and ben arrived this morning! they had a hell of a journey, but they've made it, and they'll be working here too. YES.

okay, back to the van!

love y'all.
more later.
