Operation Christmas Child

Christmas is just weeks away. That means it’s shoe box time!

National Collection Week is November 13-20.

Since graduation high school last June I decided to take a year to do missions work before attending a Christian college next September.   I have been really busy so far this fall working as a spokesperson for Operation Christmas Child.  I’ve made a powerpoint presentation and have had the opportunity to speak and sing at many churches and schools.  It was such a great experience.  Now I have been busy packing not only my own shoeboxes but working down at the collection center!

It’s inspiring to meet people from all different churches and ages from 3 to 90 helping pack shoeboxes to ship to desperate children in over 125 countries around the world.  Last year our collection center at Redeemer Lutheran collected over 12,000 boxes.

Last year I was able to travel to Belize in Central America with Samaritan’s Purse to help distribute the boxes.  It was a thrilling and amazing experience.  Exactly how you pack your box is exactly how a child will receive it.  When all the children at one school had received their boxes, at the count of three they were allowed to open their boxes.  The squeals of delight were deafening!  One little boy I had befriended could be heard above all the others as he yelled “God does love me!!!!”  He understood in just 4 little words why we make these boxes, why I and everyone else traveled so far, was to tell him that God loves him and he is unique in this world and special to God.

You can directly impact the life of not only the child, but his family and the community as well. With Samaritan’s Purse, we were able to set up free medical clinics, hold youth rallies, clean beaches and paint schools and churches.

Would you like to participate???  It is so easy and so much fun.  You can do it with your youth group, your family, your friends or just make one yourself!   First choose to make either a boy or a girl box, pick an age group and now get a cardboard or plastic shoebox. Fill it with school supplies, small toys, and hygiene items and bring it down to the center and you have an extraordinary gift for a child in need of joy and hope.  For the exact directions (there are some items you can’t include such as liquids) check out the website.
