I’m turning 26 soon. UGH. No, it’s not old, but it’s closer to 30 than 20 and given the little I’ve accomplished and the state my life is in, it’s really very depressing. Anyway, yesterday I went with a friend to see a film to celebrate her birthday, which was last month. We went with the usual “let’s see what there is” tactic and chose “Abduction” which was pretty much what we expected. An entertaining and enjoyable film, but nothing incredible. We joked that we will remember it for how we bought our tickets. I asked for two tickets and the person selling tickets asked for ages.
Me: WHAT?!
My friend: I’m 24
At that point even I had registered the situation and we were both laughing. I didn’t get to answer, but I suppose our reactions were enough. It was sort of amusing, because in the queue I had just been lamenting my age and my friend had said that she had reached the point when people mistaking her for someone younger is a compliment. Getting carded while buying alcohol is very much hoped for, but when one is buying tickets for a film rated not under fifteen , that’s something else. :) I felt a lot better about getting older, but I hope I’ll be able to look over 10 years younger in the future. :) I feel like I’ll prob. end up aging 10 years in one day or something

On school:
Sigh of relief after my presentation. I’m not that panicky about them, but I just SUCK when it comes to speaking(even more so in German) and then everyone got bored and wanted to leave, because I ran out of time (I needed that 45 minutes, darn it!!)
Russian: Oh goodness. I dislike this language and it’s the biggest dread for me, because I’m just awful at it. (and it’s so unfair that there are students, who have studied the language before, but are taking an easy course. GAH!)
Spanish: I’m not feeling that bad about this AND even though it’s ridiculously tough to write compositions on what has changed in our society with the vocabulary and skills that I have, it feels really great after it’s done (and now we have to write a fairytale in Spanish… and that’s actually going to be much harder!!)
Seminar: I HAVE ATHEME FOR MY SEMINAR/MASTER’S!! Basically it’s analysing the feelings and manifestation/expression of them in human relationships in German YA literature, which is perfect for me, because that’s something I’m into and am always analysing fictive human relationships to myself. :) Of course after being assigned the theme, I haven’t made any progress.
I still haven’t done a stupid essay on some stupid phonology/morphology/other crap though, and with psychology proving to be impossible for me. The LAST damn course, it seems like I need a NEW minor… so the degree will be prolonged after all and I have wasted a lot of time (and in some cases money) on a minor subject I can’t finish and will end up as “extra crap”.

lydzigave me these:  Jane Austen, Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire), Desperate Housewives and Football

Jane Austen: Catherine Morland

Okay, this was a tough choice, but I opted for Catherine Morland, because she’s lovely and needs more love. I fervently disagree with opinions that reduce her to a “stupid girl”, because for one, she is NOT stupid. It’s not at all surprising that she’s a little naïve especially in new situations, and while she does let her imagination run away with her and CAN be a little too trusting, her intuition is more than often spot on. I can also definitely relate to not always understanding what people are getting at, when they aren’t completely straightforward. (And I like that Catherine is artless and true herself, and I don’t find it at all odd that she would expect others to outright say what they mean and not just “hint it”. Besides, she does get better at reading between the lines. :) ) Catherine might not be super accomplished, but she’s a keen learner, when she’s motivated enough (and who can’t identify with that??). Besides, she reads and people who read are not stupid. At least not in Jane Austen’s books, in which the heroines do end up making mistakes and stupid decisions, because they’re human. And Catherine, like many others, learns and grows from her experiences. And THAT at least makes her smart, because she’s able to learn and evolve.
I think, in general, Catherine might be the heroine, most readers actually CAN identify with. She’s a romantic, who loves reading and there’s nothing objectionable about her conduct. I think Jane Austen fans, especially in her time, could really relate to her, but also admire her. She’s sincere humble, kind and polite, but NO pushover. She can be straightforward and honest without being rude and won’t just be walked over, because she doesn’t want to hurt people’s feelings. (But she would prefer not to do that). I also like, how she, as soon she starts falling for Henry, actually goes after him, in way appropriate for those times. There’s only so much she CAN do, but being open (though not always to her knowledge) about her feelings and not letting others getting in the way is enough, and actually ends up being the reason, why Henry starts falling for HER, so you go, Catherine! It’s nice to have an assertive, but not offensively aggressive heroine, who clearly has good taste in men. :)

Honourable mentions: Elizabeth Bennet of course. Given the times, a strong female character, who is not afraid to speak hermind, and who despite her wit and toughness is a loving and thoughtful person fully capable of making dumb mistakes and false assumptions.
Henry Tilney, because he’s charming, witty and just a lot of fun to be around. :) (Seriously, this guy is perfect without being boring. How awesome is that??)
And I guess I still have to mention Mr. Darcy, cause: yay romance and I get to mentioned my OTPs as well. :)

Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire: Theon Greyjoy

My adoration for Theon’s character is mainly based on the book, but he’s been one of my favourites since the beginning when I originally started with the TV series before moving to the books and am def. looking forward to the 2nd season when he will be even more involved (hopefully!). The 5th book cemented him as my number one fave though, because of the amazing way his inner conflicts were described and I just love psychologically interesting characters with issues. To me Theon is out of all the characters the best-developed and portrayed character in the series. Even when he wasn’t as prominent, I always found the situation he was in, stuck between two cultures and families, neither that treat him that well (as it turns out), a very intriguing and a obvious set up for some conflict. Yes, he has an off-putting and unpleasant personality, but everything considered, his background and situation, it makes sense. His sense of entitlement, his misogynistic approach towards women, smug attitude… and beneath it, his need to belong. And where does he belong really?? Unfortunately… nowhere. A lot of the (biased) fandom hates him for his actions (despite other characters being WAY worse), but there are others who appreciate the complexity of his tortured character. He is someone who raises a lot of feelings in people, on whom pretty much everyone has an opinion and it’s really hard to be ambivalent about him.

Desperate Housewives: Gabrielle Solis

Seriously, everyone on this show sucks to some degree, and I suppose that’s the point, so it’s hard to pick someone to like. Although, to tell the truth out of the housewives the one who has always been awesome, despite her dalliances with an underage boy, is Gabi. I like how she doesn’t pretend to be someone better or more moral than she actually is (I can’t stand the hypocrisy of almost everyone else) and owns her bitchiness. Besides, she not really that much of a bitch anyway. It’s not like she is intentionally mean and bitchy… just says it like it is. And of course if she needs to be dishonest, either for herself or others, that goes as well. Overall, I think she’s one of the better human beings, because she doesn’t self-righteously judge people or need to take a moral high ground and need acknowledgment for being a decent human being. She just is. (relatively decent, anyway. ;) ) Besides her sarcasm and bluntness are what make her an entertaining character. In short: Gabi doesn’t annoy me like the rest do, because she’s amusing and a fun character, who is more likely to make me laugh than shake my head in frustration.

Football: Philipp Lahm

The captain of Bayern München and the German national team and one of the best fullbacks in the world. And that’s not just bias, because I’m not the only person to think that or wish for a clone to play on the other side of whichever side he’s playing on. Personally, I like him best on the right, because his defensive skills shine there, but a lot prefer his more offensive style on the left. In general he’s not a very flashy player, who is hailed a lot in the spotlight, and doesn’t come off as a strong “leading player” with “presence”, which is why some criticise his position as captain. (And then on the other hand when he’s more “aggressive” and speaking his mind, he’s accused of “stirring shit”, so…) However, I feel like he’s a natural low-key leader, who wants everyone to be included in one well functioning team everyone with their own role. He doesn’t need to throw tantrums, yell at referees and players to show that he is “the boss” and I def. prefer his calm, rational attitude on the pitch. He’s also a fair player, very unlikely to commit fouls and doesn’t resort to underhanded tactics. Of course he doesn’t need to either, since he’s that good and has always been one of the most consistent players on his team(s). While I like him as a player (and that’s enough, I don’t need to care about personal lives), it’s great that he’s into charities, his own charity and taking part in promoting certain causes and I think he was the first player in Germany to openly talk about gay players in football. (BIG plus in my book) Oh, and I like how open and straightforward he is (although I suppose the controversial book that came out recently was a tad too open). In addition I like that he stayed at Bayern when he got offers from Man Utd and Barca. He’s very ambitious and I know he wants to win the CL, but I also get that he’d prefer to do it with Bayern. So… here’s to hoping that it won’t be impossible and he won’t move to another club.

Honourable mention: Thomas Müller, who has such an amazing attitude and is the very definition of team player. Despite his sudden breakthrough has always managed to remain grounded and down to earth with a realistic approach. Football needs more players like him, who clearly love what they do and have fun playing, even if it doesn’t always go so well… And he’s also been a fan of Bayern since he was a kid and loves the club, so YAY. :) <

Btw. I'm not that often on LJ and don't;t even use it as a method of procrastination. (That’s why I tend to pop up after a while to leave comments on old entries). On a positive note I’m back on my regular computer (that apparently was missing a proper Power Point programme for me to do my presentation) so I can use the Internet properly again.

Btw. 2. I think it’s sort of fitting that Bayern’s streak clean sheet streak is broken by a freaking own goal. Got to do what other teams can’t do. Heh.
