I've hardly read a thing since early June. Haven't finished a single book, actually, which is kind of depressing. My current subway read is Rosemary and Rue by
seanan_mcguire, which is perfect right now because I find it so engrossing that I can just pick it up anywhere and remember exactly what's happened and what's going on. I really enjoy the world-building,

I am a long time mac user and an big fan of the Iproducts sort of generally. I love my iphone, but there are some serious drawbacks to it you should consider before getting one. The biggest by far is that the only one who carries service for the iphone currently is AT&T. And AT&T are overpriced jerks. I find their coverage to be really inconsistant and actually kind of crappy in a lot of places. They have changed their rates to tiered data service, which makes using the iphone or other smart phones kind of pricy. And they make you sign like a two year contract. Its all kind of crap if you ask me- unless of course you already use AT&T and like it. The caveat is: it has been announced that starting next summer Iphone is going to start working with different carriers like Verizon and TMobile.
Generally, I've really liked having an iphone- when I lived in the Big City I had good & consistent service and I used the thing all the time. It was terribly useful, easy to use and nice to be able to put all my music/photos/notes/etc on one device instead of filing my purse with 20 things. I also found the software to be accessible and predictable ( you will need to have ITunes on your computer to use the phone). The screen is pretty and the graphics are great, and I think the sound quality is also pretty good. Its a nice, durable feeling product.
I guess what I'm saying about all this is that I've had no problems with the product itself- in fact I really like it. However their are serious drawbacks/considerations to the service agreements/carrier services that you should think about before getting one.

To respond to your real concern- yeah, apple products can be really hit and miss. Their warrantees are heaven- they replace anything that breaks, but it's still kind of a bitch when something breaks. I find their laptops to be much much more durrable than pc laptops, but I'm not sure how phones compare.
As far as the iPhone being an iProduct, I've used them for years so I like how they're set up, but the truth is they're all designed the same and if you don't like that format you're not going to be happy with one. One thing to really consider is the keypad/board. I don't know if the droid's is significantly different, but for a lot of people the iPhones keyboard is awkward, and something with actual buttons or at least a different set up is greatly preferred.
I don't know, but it kind of sounds like if you're having doubts about liking an apple product, you may just be making yourself unhappy if you try and force yourself to be compatible with one. I'd say just get the product that is most easy for you to use, you'll be happier than if you try and get something that looks neat but frustrates you.
