It's a pretty development. I think it was an official book or a comic book revelation, so the canon is kinda iffy (I think "Anya Emerson" comes from the Sunnydale High Yearbook), but Joss says it's so, and his word is law. I linked the Wikipedia article where I got the info, by the way. =)

You know, I never ever thought of that as a British slang word, I always thought it was universal. Hmmm...

And yeah, I think they picked that name exactly because of its connotations.
