So, I ran my first 5k last Saturday and unfortunately it was not a 100% success. It was the hottest day of the year, in the 80's and even hotter downtown at sundown amongst all the streets and asphalt. I took it easy the night before, ate healthy food during the day, but I did not drink enough water throughout the day. Before the race started I just remember being perpetually thirsty... I drank a bunch before the race but it just wasnt enough... maybe that whole day I had had about 4 cups of water? usually by that time I'm over 8. Anyway, throughout my training I have never, not once, had to stop for water or run with water. Sure, I get thirsty, but I just drink before and after and it's NBD. It's only a 35 minute thing and I've never had a problem.
So, about a mile and a half in, I get thirsty. REALLY thirsty. I'm struggling to swallow and wet my lips but there is just NOTHING there. My skin is bone-dry, no sweat or anything of the sort. I felt sick. All these people were running past me with bottles of water they had brought themselves (none was given out on the route for the event) and I just was dying to ask someone for water but wouldn't let myself do it in the mind-set that they came prepared and I wasn't, so I shouldnt bring them down. So I keep pushing through, and then I feel my left hamstring start to tighten up. Keep running, keep running until I feel it clench up, like a fist or a charley horse or whatever, and so I stopped, and walked for the rest of the race except for the very end. At that point, even the walking was a struggle. I tried to keep running a few times but my body just would not do it. I came very close to injury and my leg hurt until yesterday, so about 3 days it took to heal.
So, I am disappointed.. yes I finished the race, but I did not meet my goal of running the whole thing nonstop. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE RUN 3 MILES BEFORE MULTIPLE TIMES. So technically, I met my goal, but NOT the goal of running an official race/run nonstop. So... I'm doing another one July 24th to benefit colon cancer research. It's around the waterfront so there wont be much in the way of hills, and I have 2 more months of running 3 miles a run and acclimate to hotter temperatures. So, I am starting training again tonight after work since I feel all healed up.
In other news summer has me feeling all manic... i've been buying stuff nonstop and going out for food/drinks excessively when I really shouldn't be. I want more tattoos, a new haircut, a new bra, etc. Got some new impossible project film i'm excited to try out, and working on a new blog... like I don't have enough already. Hope everyone is having a swell summer. Here's some pics... I'm back to using the AE-1 lately.. this is a photo dump of 35mm from the past few months. I have some polaroids and mamiyas i need to get up on here eventually...
