i saw the darjeeling limited last night. i'd been looking forward to seeing the film for a while and was really pleased with it. parts of it were humorous, but the story as a whole was very touching. it was also extremely appealing visually and i enjoyed the music as well. peter was my favorite brother overall, but i always enjoy jason schwartzman's characters as well because i think he's a really interesting actor. i feel like he has this sense of childlike playfulness as well as urgency when speaking his lines, and i also think the lines are always spoken with extra great timing. i don't know a lot about acting, just that the way jason schwartzman presents his characters is always striking.
an article from slate magazine called the film racist, and i kept that idea in mind while watching. i saw what the artice meant, because it was basically these three white, seemingly wealthy men acting out these selfish spiritual quest while the poor indians served as a background, and their community merely as a tool to aid the men in their self-realizations. but at the same time, i don't see how else the film could have been done, if it was still to take place in a foreign country like india. i think maybe if a person went into the film without racism on their mind and just saw each character as people doing different things rather than feeling the need to categorize everyone, something like racism wouldn't become an issue in this instance.
