I've only recently stumbled on Neue Deutsche Todeskunst as a micro-genre of electronic music. I've always thought of Das Ich as an industrial dance band, and could never explain why I like them so much more than other industrial dance bands. It all makes more sense if I think about them as pop ambassadors of NDT (or, at the time, pop ambassadors for Goethes Erben). Discovering the name of the micro-genre also gives me a handful of bands to investigate, including Relatives Menschsein and Stillste Stund, both new to me this month.
Chrysalis Morass is a great band name. It was a side-project of members of Eat Your Make-Up, and apparently both bands are now defunct. More evidence that the surprising and delightful deathrock revival of the '00s is over. Sad.
A few of my favorite bands aren't widely popular, and I can understand why. (Neubauten, Deine Lakaien, Marc Almond, there are reasons why they aren't number one with a bullet.) Ataraxia is a favorite that seems to have drastically underachieved their potential popular appeal. Pretty and interesting melodies, varied but largely traditional instrumentation, beautiful vocals. Why doesn't every Cure fan on earth have a few Ataraxia CDs for their club-night cool-downs?
