OK this story starts out sad but gets pretty uplifting...
* Daptone Records (Independent record label, Born 2002 in Brooklyn NY)
I loves me some Funk. While I was a purist/elitist for several years... only collecting the classic original recordings from the late 60's and early 70's... I then found several modern artists treating the Funk with the kind of reverence I could respect. Daptone Records was a quick favorite because they sell both re-issues of classics and a handful of modern artists performing in the classic Funk style (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Sugarman Three, etc). It's worth noting that the Dap-Kings performed the funky horn bits on Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" album, if it helps to name-drop someone successful here. OK... Now here's where the story gets sad. About one week ago... the Daptone studios were broken into and thieves made off with the better part of its equipment. The company is so small that they sadly don't have insurance or enough funds to replace their equipment. They're screwed. OK... Back to the happy stuff. I just saw online that someone started up a website where you can help support Daptone. They are measuring progress by each $4 donation, which they equate to a cheap drink from a bar. Nicely done, and very much in synch with Daptone's vibe. With this kind of outpouring of support, I'm regaining that warm "the world is a good place" feeling. =)
