Previous Chapter Chapter 18
Jack hadn't slept a wink the previous night. He had stayed up until dawn drinking rum and thinking over what he would say to William. A simple apology wouldn't do. Judging by how angry the blacksmith had been the last few times he'd seen him, the pirate knew he'd need something to show how sincere he was. He'd considered bringing the younger man flowers, but dismissed the idea instantly. That would only make William even angrier.
He had found the perfect peace offering, after three bottles of rum, lying on the cabin rolled into a far corner of the living space. It was a bottle of French wine. He'd promised to share a glass with Will after the birth of their child. Now that the baby, or rather, babies had been born, it was a perfect opportunity to make good on his promise. Bottle in hand, Jack made his way the smithy that Bootstrap and Will now called home, first thing that morning.
He was thankful to have Bootstrap on his side. Surely the more reasonable Turner would talk some sense into his ill tempered son. The question was, would Bootstrap have had time to do so by now? He received the answer to that question when his old friend answered the door, a troubled look on his face.
"Jack? What're you doin' here?" the other man babbled awkwardly.
Jack frowned at his friend's words. "You told me ta come. Is somethin' wrong?"
Bootstrap groaned as he struggled to find the right words to explain. "Well, it's just... he's here."
The Pirate Lord tensed, knowing instantly who it was his friend was referring to. He felt his grasp on the wine bottle tighten as he struggled to stay calm and collected. "When did he get here?" he asked, being careful to keep his tone even.
"Not long ago," Bill said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "Said he needed ta speak with Will... they went straight upstairs."
Jack wordlessly brushed past his friend as he headed straight up the stairs.
"J-Jack," Bootstrap started.
"Don't worry, mate. I won't kill him," he lied before continuing up the flight of steps. Creeping up the last few steps, the pirate made sure to stay as quiet as possible as he followed the sound of voices to a slightly opened door on the far right side of the corridor.
"Honestly Captain, you're unbelievable!" he heard Will shout indignantly. He eased closer towards the opened door, trying to see the two men standing inside, but he was unable to spot them. He was, however, able to see that they were currently standing in what appeared to be William's bedroom, a fact which made Jack's blood boil. "You have quite a bit of nerve barging in here at the crack of dawn, demanding to make changes to our agreement."
He heard his father scoff at the young man's words. "I hardly consider knockin' politely an' waitin' ta be allowed into the smithy, that I bought with me own money, 'bargin' in'," Teague began. Jack could practically hear that smug smile of his in his tone. "An' as fer makin' changes ta our agreement... well I do recall ye doin' quite the same last night."
Jack tensed at his father's words. Last night? The two of them were together last night? Why? And what exactly did William agree to?
The pirate held his breath as an uneasy pause fell upon the two. "For entirely different reasons than what you're asking for," Will countered awkwardly.
The sound of a chair creaking suddenly caught Jack's attention, followed by soft footsteps. "The way I sees it, Spitfire," Teague continued, seemingly ignoring Will's words entirely. "Ye're makin' out far better on this deal than ol' Teague. Surely ye're not tryin' ta take advantage of a poor ol' man, now are ye, darlin'?"
"You're the one whose trying to take advantage of me," the blacksmith said crossly. "Don't forget that I saved your life Captain, and that's something that not even a pirate like you could put a price on."
There was a brief pause between the two just before the older man spoke again. "An' I generously decided to free Jacky boy for ye, instead of allowin' 'im to rot away in me brig."
Jack stiffened as Will's slim figure suddenly passed across his field of vision before disappearing again. "I gave you what you asked in exchange," the boy grumbled, humiliation clear in his tone.
Jack couldn't stand it anymore. His heart was hammering in his chest. Will had been the one to set him free! He'd gone out of his way to help him. He'd willingly put himself deeper into Teague's debt for him. That proves it, he thought. He still loves me! He must love me if he's willin' ta do somethin' like this. But what did the fool give Teague in exchange? He knew his father. Once he put a man in his debt, they'd never be free. Will was just digging himself a deeper grave.
Teague chuckled as he took a few steps in Will's direction. He stopped right where Jack could see him, his back turned towards the observing pirate. "Oh, but darlin'," he heard his father purr, a sound that make Jack's stomach tie itself into knots. "I am but a mere mortal. Surely ye cannot expect me to resist yer charms. Yer... beauty."
"Oh what do I have to do to be rid of you?" Jack heard the young smith grumble wearily. His heart clenched at Will's pathetic tone. He longed to rush into the room and slit his father's throat so that he and Will could get on with their lives. Sitting back and listening to the two argue was torture, but he knew he couldn't just barge in. Will would be furious at him if he did such a thing.
The old man reached out a slim, feeble hand and Jack had to shift to see that he was resting it on Will's hunched shoulder. "Sorry Spitfire," he chuckled, "but I saved yer life first. Ye an' yer babes would've died were it not fer me."
Jack watched as Will spun around on the old man, a disgusted look clear on his face. "Don't you dare talk about my children, your grandchildren as if they were some sort of bargaining chip in your twisted little games! Do with me as you please, but if you ever-"
"Forgive me, darlin'!" Teague said quickly, putting on an apologetic demeanor as he held his hands up in defense. "Forgive this ol' love sick fool."
I doubt "love" is the cause of your sickness, Jack thought dryly.
"What is it that you want from me?" Will said testily, his patience with the old man quickly running out.
"I want fifty percent of yer profit," Teague said flatly.
"Sod off!" Will shout back, and Jack had to bite his cheek to keep from laughing at the young man's outraged response.
"It's a more than generous offer, considerin' what I've provided ye with, Spitfire," he said, emphasizing his statement by waving his arms as if to indicate what he had meant. "Think of it as a way of payin' me back financially."
"My way of 'paying you back financially' was by supplying you and your bloody crew with weapons!"
"That was with our old agreement, but that changed once ye altered yer side of the arrangement"
"Well neither of us shall be altering anything any further! You got what you wanted from me last night so just be happy with that."
Teague took a few steps closer towards Will causing the young man to take a few steps back. Soon the two were completely out of Jack's sight. "How can I only be satisfied with one meager kiss?" the old man cooed followed by a soft thump, indicating that he had literally backed Will into a corner.
Jack felt his eyes widen and his heart stop cold. He had never felt so angry as he did at this very instant. Kiss? Will had kissed him? Kissed his father! The very image made him want to retch, but more so, he wanted to kill the old pirate. He wanted to throw him out the bloody window. Wanted to-
"-sample heaven," he heard Teague continued. "Ye know what ye need to do to get me to end this game of ours, so why not jus' give it ta me? Don't play coy, ye know ye want me too."
"Don't touch me!"
At that moment, something in side of Jack snapped. He couldn't just stand there and listen anymore. Without a second thought, he threw the door wide open and rushed into the room. He watched as William pushed Teague away just as the two turned to stare at him in stunned silence. He didn't bother to let either recover as he connected his fist with the elderly pirate's good eye, causing the man to fly backwards and crash into the wall. Teague slumped for a moment before crumpling in a heap onto the floor.
