rain on tuesday, nights in miami

a steady rain has been falling since i woke this morning. the rain is good for my garden but not so good for my plans to go to the botanical gardens today with tony.I had a dream last night about him. In my dream Tony and I were high school students at my old high school. we had cut class and were laying in a field and kissing as rain fell upon us. Tony and i have kissed before, but never in a field and i dont think ever in the rain. While traveling we slept in many fields, and we had gotten caught in the rain while sleeping on the roof of the synagog and riding on freight trains. It was on this trip that we first kissed, possibly even fell in love. Tony worte that he loved me in his journal, and we've told each other this a few times, but what that means i do not know.

Maybe it was in Miami, drinking red wine on the beach hoping to see cuban refugees wash ashore in boats made of bath tubs, that we first "fell in love". In the liquor store Tony asked "what we should get?", he suggested red wine, i told him

"red wine makes me want to make out"

he responded with "red wine it is!" and smiled.

Tony has the most beautiful smile, its like silent laughter and feels like an embrace. we bought a bottle and left the store arm in arm laughing, from there we walked through the crowded floridian streets of november. The miami night was full of club goers, fags, tourist and families. we found our way to the  shore, the ocean and the moon. it was warm and the air smelled of limes, mint, and roast pork. I dont remember if the moon was full or not but without question it was a magical night. on the sand we sat passing the bottle of red, sharing stories of  our grandparents falling in love. while the moon was still high above us the wine ran out and no bath tubs washed ashore. restless with romance and adventure we left the beach to explore the city, we were drunk on wine and high on expectation. we danced through the alleys and streets of that foreign american city, we fell down laughing and it seemed as though there was a parade and a circus on every corner yet even still we were convinced we were the only 2 people in the world. On the street mall grew these strange trees with fruit that looked like potatoes. We found their odd shape and dense form hilarious. we so desperately wanted to see what the looked like inside, we tried to crack them open, but to no avail, they were harder than stones.

laughing the whole way, trying to get back to the church or synagog where we had stashed our bags and planned to spend the night, we got lost. we stumbled into an alley with golden light reflecting off  white walls and blue windows. my legs grew weak with laughter and i sat on cobble stone steps to find my balance and catch my breath, this is when Tony kissed me. I kissed him back, hard and awkward, like a teenagers first kiss. it was real and true, strange new and unexplainable.  we kept kissing knowing there was nowhere else in the world we would rather be or nowhere else we should be.

What happened next I dont remember. I do not recall walking to the synagog,  but i do remember drunkenly climbing the grapefruit tree and falling asleep in tony's arms beneath that magical moon, breathing in love and citrus and this will forever be one of my favorite memories
