Oh it was apple alright! I used Mutsu, Spy and Granny smith :) I also made a caramel sauce and dusted it with cinnamon sugar. Yummy. However I'd like to try a different method of strudling next time. I have an idea I want to try : Instead of just brushing the phyllo sheets with butter between layers.. I want to sprinkle a bread crumb and crushed roasted nut mixture between the layers. I'm hoping this well help to keep the layers even more separate and even crispier. Maybe I'll try it tonight :)
Can you eat apples on their own? If you can, you can make it without additional sugar. I only added sugar cuz Matt likes it :) Also, as Matt suggested, you could splenda that shit up instead.
I can eat apples on their own, but only like one. I tried making a strudel once and substituting splenda and it totally tasted awful. Sometimes, you just can't use splenda in recipes, it's ruined a number of my cookies too.
What if you did like an apple cranberry strudel? Cranberries aren't as high in sugar are they? Or how about something like Baklava that doesn't have the fruit.. just a swettened nuts and bread crumb mixture between layers (you'd have to roast the nuts and toss them with the splenda to make it sweet, then sprinkle that mixture between the layers. Hmmm. Maybe I'll make it my mission to develop a sugar free strudel-esque treat for you. :)
It was apple....and it was scrum-diddly-umptious! and you can probably make one with splenda instead of sugar... except for the fructose in the apples.
