Vampire smut with real vampires!

I gave 'Dead Until Dark' another chance and was happy I did. I started to read it, and was so annoyed at Sookie for beginning the book with how hot she is that I had to put it down. If you much come right out and tell the reader how good looking the main character is, first person is not really the way to do it. Most people don't go out and dwell on how good looking their ass is to complete strangers.

But after that unfortunate beginning, it was a pretty good read and much better than True Blood in my opinion. True Blood added characters, plots, and put emphasis on secondary characters in order to pad the thing out, and most of those just got on my nerves. I liked that Sookie was forced to handle the climax alone in the book, as opposed to having both Bill and Sam there in the show. It's hard to read vampire smut romance without comparing it to Twilight (especially when they are so similar), but being alone for the big finale really makes Sookie a stronger character than Bella (although they are both rather bland).

Bill is protective and creepy, but that's not played is being 'the perfect boyfriend' as it is with Edward. It's played as being protective and creepy and something Sookie has to deal with. But we also get to see that he's protecting her from something serious and not just her best friend who he happens to be jealous of.

But what the hell is up with the glowing, shimmering vampires? What. The. Hell. I've gone back and made my vampires even uglier in retaliation.

I think I will add the next book to my wish list. I'm curious.
