Today my dad called just to say hi and tell me he loves me. He usually calls to check in, but today he had a specific reason. A technician at the dealership he works at was hit by a car while riding his bike. He wasn't wearing a helmet and he hit is head, hard, and is in the hospital. They're not sure if he's going to make it. He's 21.
After I talked to dad I started thinking about things. About taking every single moment of our lives for granted, as if we're invisible. At this age we feel as though we're on top of the world, untouchable, young, wild and free. We never stop to think about how blessed we are to be here, and that out of the millions of people who suffer every day, we're not one of them. We never consider the risk we take in driving too fast or crossing the street or smoking too many cigarettes. We remember to lock our cars and houses but we drink and drive. We don't wear helmets. Not just when we ride a bike, but all the time. I know, I know, it may sound too deep. But we never know when we may have to thank god that we remembered to put our helmets on. We're so fragile but careless, like our fate is a glass football and we're getting reading to punt.
Every breath is a gift. Life is a gift. Be happy you have it. Thank your mom and dad. And always wear a helmet.
