Application:

How long have you been writing?
I started of with writing short stories last summer when I was bored. Soon, I discovered the magic of writing and now it is what I love to do. I was writing as long as I can remember. Four months ago I found some silly but cute fairytales that I wrote when I was seven.

What is your writing preference?
I write what comes to my mind. Sometimes it is just a one chapter story, sometimes it’s around five chapters long and sometimes it’s around thirty chapters long. Depends on the story and where is it going.

Where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from everywhere. A dream can be a great idea, something I see on the street when I’m going home from school, a simple word or a person can start something big. Sometimes when I just sit and read a book or listen to music, something pops into my head and I grab a pen, write it down and if it’s worth it…I start writing.

Favorite author and why?
I have many favorite authors. J. R. R. Tolkien is perfect for creating the whole world of Lord of the Rings, so is J. K. Rowling. I like Shakespeare although I don’t write drama etc. Clara Vasil, Slovakian author, and many more.

Are you reading anything at the moment? If so, what?
I’m reading Ema and I from Sheila Hocken for a book report and it’s pretty nice and I finished reading a great book two days ago called Eragon from Christopher Paolini.

Random likes:
Animals, running through the summer rain, passion, books, imagination, reading, a hot bath.

Random dislikes:
Today’s lunch, Kate M., moths (hate them!), neighbor’s cat, math.

Name:
Elizabeth, call me Liz or Elisa or even Llama if you want. (Yes, I was trying to be funny, but I am aware of the fact that I probably failed.) :)

Age:
17

Sex:
Female

This story is a one-shot told from one old lady’s point of view. She’s remembering her whole life and how she lived it through. I don’t usually write these things, but this story was one of my first so I feel attached to it.

Just Another Rainy Day…

People say that everything in life has its own meaning. They were right. My life was so perplexed and full of unbelieving moments, losses, findings, ups and downs. Every little thing of these had its little meaning and cause.

People also say that we’ll find the real happiness when we find our meaning of life.

I sighed.

Meaning of life. Such beautiful, mysterious and important words. What is it really? When will one find it? And what’s it like? I thought about it so many times, yet I never found answers to those questions.

I turned off the TV and stood up. I wasn’t youngest anymore, I was 67 years old. Yes, me, Alexandra Gardner. I have two beautiful children and five grandchildren. Ever since my first son was born, I didn’t wish for anything else than for the happiness of my children. And it seemed everything was going fine. Son was married to a very nice woman and they had two boys and one girl. My daughter was married also and she had two boys.

I walked to the window and looked out. It was raining and I saw that summer is slowly fading away and fall is taking over the world.

When I was younger, around twelve or thirteen, I said to myself that I will never fall in love and get married. I was afraid of the possibility that it wouldn’t work out. The never ending circle of divorces and lost marriages was scaring me. I didn’t want to end up like that. Then, when I was older and started a relationship with someone, I never even thought that there could be something more than just dating and having fun together. At times, I even tried to distance myself from feelings like love.

I didn’t understand it. I didn’t understand how it works, how it can make people happy or hurt them so deeply. I was afraid. But from time to time, you have to take a risk and meeting with John Gardner changed my whole life. It wasn’t love at first sight, but from our good and honest friendship developed something more, something more precious.

Love. True love. Only then I understood her. How beautiful and pure it can be, yet so dangerous. Only then I understood that love and only love can lift you so high into the clouds and make you so, so happy. I miss John greatly. He passed away six years ago. He was a good man, husband and a father. To this day I thank God for sending him to me and that our love lasted for so long and is still lasting in my heart.

I backed away from the window and walked out on the veranda. They should be here by now; my kids were supposed to come with their kids to visit me. I lived here alone, but luckily, my terrier Mike was always here to keep me company.

I put my foot on the veranda and shivers ran up my spine. It was pretty cold. I walked to my old chair and wrapped myself in a warm blanket. The rain wasn’t strong and our veranda was perfectly built so it didn’t reach me. I looked around and sighed. When John and I moved here there was a beautiful countryside around. In front of our house was a little park with a clean stream and a fountain in the middle. Then there was a simple road and next to it was a large corn field. But now there wasn’t a park or a corn field. They built a shopping mall here couple of years ago. I hated it.

When I was young I always wanted to settle down in a place like this. Calm and peaceful. But before that, I always wanted my life to be wild and unexpected. I never wanted to know where tomorrow will take me. I wanted to travel the world, see everything, and know everything. And it even was like that.

I had a great work where I met John for the first time. We traveled a lot and saw all kinds of places that I always dreamed of. But when our son was born, we had to slow down and concentrate mainly on him. We moved here and didn’t travel so much anymore. After all, we’ve had enough of the traveling. After our son, we had a girl and we were truly happy.

Only now I realized how happy I was. How amazing my life was, even if it was difficult at times. Only now I realized that I tripped in life many times, but whenever I tripped, there was always someone to help me stand up.

I always dreamed that when I would be old, I’d be happy with my life and be proud of the way I lived it. And I even was. I reached my goals and dreams and I found new ones. I was always trying to live life to the full and not waste a single second.

“Grandma!” my thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a little boy standing in the doorway.  It was my grandson.

“Hello! Are you finally here? That’s great. Come here.” I called. He ran and hugged me tightly.

“We missed you.”

“I missed you too. Let’s go inside, shall we?” he took my hand and led me into the house.

And finally, only now I realized that I found my meaning of life, the real happiness. Maybe everyone sees it differently, but for me it was my love for my family, my heart, my wonderful memories and my life. I was happy and proud of my kids, my husband…of myself. I had a happy life and I was thankful for that.

Interesting how can one come up with this in such moment. I mean, it was just another rainy day…
