Years had passed since he’d been buried six feet under. Years had passed since his brother had blown his face away with one bullet erasing him from this planet. Years had passed since he’d been laid to rest with no one to shed a tear over him. The only words that had been carved into the small stone were his name.

“Are you sure about this?” a soft voice asked.

“You’re the only one who isn’t sure about this,” came the laughing response.

Years had aged them all. A few grey hairs here, a few pounds there. But it had also softened blows laid upon tender flesh years ago. Scars had healed inside and out and now was the time to say a simple word of goodbye.

“Alright, alright.” The chuckle melted softly.

Four men stepped up to the long since forgotten grave. Slowly one of them kneeled down and tore a few weeds away and brushed the moss off. “They really haven’t taken care of his grave.”

“No one to fucking pay for it,” came the harsh response.

“Yeah, I know but it’s a public graveyard,” he said. “You’d think they’d want to keep it nice.”

“It’s a big Cemetery Bammie,” the soft voice filtered down.

“I know,” Bam said sighing, tracing the name of his brother silently. “You know, I didn’t think I could ever forgive him,” he said sadly. “But I have because you know... he’s made me who I am.”

“A chicken shit who’s afraid of his own shadow?” the rough voice came again.

“Shut up Chad,” the fourth man finally spoke.

Bam laughed softly and stood up. “No, someone who cares about his friends and those he calls family,” he said with a grin then hugging Ville. “Right?”

“You are the most caring person I know, Bammie,” Ville said with a small smile.

“Can we go now?” Chad asked. “This place give me the creeps,” he said.

Bam waved him away. “Go, I’ll be down in a minute,” he said softly.

Ville sighed. “Are you sure?” he asked.

Bam nodded. “Yeah,” he said.

“We’ll be waiting,” Ville smiled.

Bam nodded and waited till his lover and two best friends were out of site. He sighed sitting in the grass he looked silently at the grave.

“You know there was a time when you loved me,” he said softly. “I know there was cause I found pictures of you playing with me and holding me,” he said. “Of course that was when Mom and Dad were around.” He took a deep breath. “After you took me in something changed between us you just weren’t you, I was locked up inside myself so I couldn’t figure it out.” He sighed and shook his head and slowly reached into his coat. He laid something on the gravestone. “To Happier times, eh Jess Jess?” he asked, taking a drink from a flask then pouring the rest on his brother’s grave.

He set off down the hill the setting sun catching the object laying on the stone. Laying there was a picture of the two Jess was holding Bam tightly in a hug near the edge of a cliff. Bam looked to be in awe and Jess was just terrified, holding his younger brother close to him to protect him from any and all danger.

THE END.
