Links Dwell Here Light shone through the creme colored curtains and warmed the skin of his back. The quilt had slipped to his waist. He woke slowly and smiled. It felt so good to wake up in a bed every morning. Sitting up slowly, Bam ran his fingers through his hair then stretched. He had work to do today.
After his daily morning routine, he walked into the small kitchen, tucking his shirt into his trousers.
“Morning Bam!” Ryan smiled happily at him from the table. He was shoveling his breakfast into his mouth.
“Slow down, you’ll get a stomach ache.” Ryan shrugged and Bam laughed.
“Sit down.” Ville commanded from over the stove, “Your breakfast is almost finished.”
It had really happened. They had made it. They were free. Bam was free, he was twenty-two years old and he was free, Ville was almost twenty-four and he was free too. Ryan was ten and Bam was glad that the boy didn’t have to lead the same life as Bam had led.
“Alright Ryan, go get your books, Angie and her brother will be by any minute to pick you up for school.”
“Alright Ville! Fantastic breakfast.” The blonde boy ran quickly up the stairs and Bam chuckled lightly as he picked up a piece of bacon.
“What are you laughing at? I do make fantastic breakfasts!” Ville pulled a pout onto his face and Bam shook his head.
“I didn’t say anything about that, Ville. I was just thinking about how perfect this is.” A soft smile curled over Ville’s lips and he reached over to take one of Bam’s hands.
“I know what you mean.” Pulling his lover’s hand to his lips, Ville placed a kiss on Bam’s knuckles and the two of them became entranced, with one another, and with their apparent success.
“EW! Not Again!!” Ryan’s voice was heard from the stairs, followed by fake retching noises. The two older males broke out of their entrancement and Bam stood up. Ryan squealed and ran for the door, pushing the screen open and sprinting down the lane to the main road.
“Yeah you’d better run! See you after school!!” Bam called after the boy who just waved in return. Standing inside the screen, Bam watched as he hopped into a carriage with the girl from up the road.
Hot and sweaty from working in their fields all morning, Bam walked into the house for lunch. Ville was humming a quiet tune as he entered the kitchen.
“How’s work?” Ville asked, placing a sandwich and milk in front of him.
“Rough. You’re lucky you’re the lady in our relationship.” Ville snorted and replied.
“I really don’t think I was the lady last night, if you’ll remember correctly Bammie. I have a piano lesson to teach tonight and I got a letter from my parents.”
“What did it say?”
“They want to see us at Christmas. Please Bam? It’s only a few hours by train and they said they’d pay for tickets for the three of us.” Bam smiled, Ville sounded so enthusiastic.
“Whatever makes you happy.”
Ville pulled his trousers down and slipped nude into the bed. Bam was already turned over, he was exhausted from his long day’s work.
“Bam?” He asked, slipping his arm around the younger man.
“Hmm?”
“Will you tell me what was in the bag the night we took Ryan?” Bam turned his head as far as he could and looked at Ville.
“What brought that up?”
“I found it when I was cleaning today. I left it in there, but what’s in it?”
“My files. Ryan’s files. My background, my history, it’s in there and Ryan’s too. I know about my parents, I know about my brother.” He said, his voice sounded so sad. “That night Jimmy, Jared and Johnny caught me. They had heard from on the outside that I was coming back for him. They stole those records for me.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. They thought I wanted them. There was also a bunch of Mizz Adair’s tobacco and jewelry. Some of it helped us get this place you know?” This place. They had moved West, just like Bam wanted. They lived in a rural area and kept to themselves. Their farmhouse was small, but for the three of them, it was more than enough.
“I know now. I’m doing okay for a spoiled rich kid, right Bammie?”
“You’re doing wonderful Ville, considering all we’ve been through.” Ville nodded, his head was resting on Bam’s shoulder. “I really did underestimate you.” Their conversation lapsed into silence. “I love you.” The younger man whispered. Ville turned Bam’s head towards him and kissed him gently, when he pulled back he whispered into his lover’s ear.
“I love you too Bam. I’m with you always, because we know, maybe better than anyone that, it’s a hard knock life.”
The End.
