Long time comin'...

For lots of things these days, not to mention this entry.

:)

I'm going to make this short and sweet because my dog's staring at me. I think he needs to poop.

I took a new job in September that has really made my life more meaningful. I can't really explain to anyone how rewarding it is, because I believe it takes a certain kind of person to thrive in this line of work, and these people are too few and far between. So just be happy for me, because I couldn't be happier, myself.

Oh yeah, the job.

Right now I'm working for a large and continuously growing nonprofit called Chicago House. We provide social services for people living with HIV/AIDS. In fact, it is the first organization in the U.S. to deal with these issues. I'm working with one of its programs that deals with prevention and case management called "Be Aware, Be Alive." Basically, my role is to travel around Chicago (particularly in the West Side and the South Side...okay, underserved areas if that means nothing to you) testing people for HIV and providing pre- and post- test counseling. I also conduct workshops around different clinics/community centers/shelters to teach people about a variety of topics regarding HIV/AIDS.

This is exactly the line of work I was looking for right out of college and I feel so blessed to have been given the opportunity to get involved, because getting into nonprofit work is incredibly difficult and requires a serious amount of networking and experience.

Also, Carson just took a new job. He's going to be a lawyer for Chicago's police union.

Things are grand. Naturally there are a couple things I would change right now, but these changes will come in due time. All in all, I am thriving in this city.

And piggybacking on Mika's last entry...for the first time ever, I feel proud to live in this country, and I feel hopeful for what is to come.
