for our final project in my photo class we were to print and mount six pictures that made some sort of social statement. some arbitrary art student thought he'd get real "deep" by printing a story line about individuality and conformity and went on to explain that if you're a conformist, you conform to the standards of society and it's norm's, but if you choose to be a non-conformist, you're really just conforming to the ideas of non-conforming and that there is no way to be an individual because there are hundreds of people just like you. so there he is, on his high horse thinking his quasi-innovative dictation of the ways of the world were offering us some sort of mental food for thought and i just wanted to slap the bullshit right out of him. so i politely raised my hand and asked, "your ideas are trite, yet well rehearsed but haven't we heard it all before? it's no forward thinking, proclaiming that individuality is dead. shouldn't the real statement be: conform or don't conform, what matters is that you maintain your integrity through all paths that you choose and through all things that you do?"

he sort of started at me with his mouth open for a few moments. looked to the teacher, who then moved right along to the next student's presentation, as if i hadn't even been in the room, much less opened my mouth to speak.
