Just to go a little more in depth about the finals for counties.
6 people make it up in each weapon. Neither Lisa or I ever made it before. She was 6-0 for the day, I was 5-1, and Cooke was the only person who had beaten me. She was 6-0 (Ward Melville).
The lineup for girls foil was suprising: Me, Lisa, Jen Olsen from Newfield, who I haven't gotten more than 1 touch on since 10th grade, the Villanuevas from Brentwood who are sort of pushovers, and Cooke, who I go on and off with- lately she's been beating me.
Looking at the lineup I figured I'd take fourth. Me and Lisa had to fence first- I lost 4-5 because she's amazing. My second bout was against Jen. She beat me in overtime 3-2. Then I beat one of the Villanuevas, 5-1 or something.
Then its Lisa vs. Cooke. Both were undefeated for the day. Lisa lost. She took off her mask and my heart just broke. I told her not to worry, and that I would take care of Cooke. It was sort of an empty promise, I was really just trying to get her to cheer up.
Then Jen Olsen and Cooke fenced. Jen was winning 4-1, and Cooke came back to win it 5-4. I hooked Lisa up for her last bout, as Jen was getting off, and Jen just looked at me and told me I had to win. Lisa won her next bout 5-0.
Finally it was the last bout- me vs. Cooke. I spent the previous 10 minutes or so just pacing, trying to psyche myself up. I hooked up, saluted her, the director, and Lisa. Put my mask on, and just thought of all the work that girl has done for us over the last four years, her two years as team captain, all the tournaments and meets that she's done so much for. And her last shot at this championship was on my shoulders. Cooke didn't give me a second glance, she thought she had me beaten.
And I got my five touches, saluted her, and saw the look on Lisa's face. And I think it might have been literally the greatest moment of my life. I will never forget turning around and seeing the tears streaming down her face and knowing how happy she was and that I gave her another chance at that medal.
Then I figured I had fourth place, and Jen was 3rd. There were some issues with the scoresheet though, and they called me over to verify it, and I saw a 3 next to my name, and I just looked at Glenn, and he nodded, and I burst into tears for the umpteenth time that day. And I got the bronze. And I bet it felt as good as the gold.
