Exciting Job Opportunity

Seriously, I DO watch too much TV. Last night's Smallville and My Name Is Earl both revolved around Mexican immigrants...and they were on at the same time! Doo doo doo, let's check the Io and see what's on Kid's CW tomorrow morning...The Batman "The Big Chill" followed by Xiaolin Showdown "The Deep Freeze". Okay...seriously...

::takes deep breath::

While searching for jobs on Craig's List, I came upon an amusing post. Well, not so much amusing as irritating. It's been removed because it was a scam, but WHAT a scam!

I'm sure you've seen this in e-mail, one of those guys who's a CEO for a textile company (sometimes it's Dale Nottingham of Irvine Textiles, sometimes it's Dale Irvine of Nottingham Textiles) overseas, and to get paid he wants you to send the money to you in the states and then you take out 10% and send him the rest through Western Union or some such. (if you really want to see what it's like, check this out - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006050925099)

And there are THOUSANDS of these! On Craig's List, on Myspace, in our e-mails, fliers on our college campuses, the prize in our cereal box. It's suffocating, and it's ridiculous.

Why do we do these things to each other? I know some people fall for it, but you've got to be a real jerk to do something like this. I can't even begin to guess how many people are behind this, or where it began. During the days of the Pony Express, men would get letters from the frontier asking about financial help and needing to wire money. Maybe it was the ancient Greeks.

It wasn't hard to spot as a scam. All in caps, a few spelling and grammar errors, a company that doesn't pop up on Google, and the word "Legal" repeated three different times.

I want it to go away, but I know it won't. It's not a physical thing you can kill, it's an idea. You could no more kill the heart of "the scam" than you can kill concepts like "free enterprise" or "satisfaction". In the end, is there really any point in trying to fight it?
