Grad Comic Lecture

One thing I really like about college is all the interesting lectures they have. On Friday I went to one, and the speaker was the creator of the web comic PhD (Piled Higher and Deeper). When I looked at the poster for promotion, what caught my attention were the cartoon characters and the words "creator of the web comic". I had no idea the talk was aimed towards graduates. So, the majority of people there were grad students, and then there were about five undergrads. Pretty fun being in the minority.

So, the creator talked about life as a grad student and procrastination. Even though I don't have the experience of a grad student, I was able to understand most of his jokes, and not just the dirty ones (nice thing about college is actually having intelligent jokes for a change). Some jokes were corny, but the guy was able to speak and pitch them well. The entire speech was an hour long and I didn't fade out too long like I normally do. I think everything went smoothly for him.

I really liked his artwork. He's able to draw guys and girls quite well. I'm glad he doesn't make the women a typical hottie, one of the girls, who is a geek, is nicely drawn. At the end, I went to go talk with him about his comic. It's funny how there are all these people who are in are working in labs with experiments and got a kick out of all the complex physics and math jokes, and yet I just had a few short lines about his art. I think it's pretty cool that someone who works with the science portion of his brain is able to make such wonderful art with great jokes.

I would have liked to go to the free food and book signing, but the event was held over in a bar. And since I am under 21, I thought it would have been best to not go. Sure, they may have let me in, but I'm not a fan of bars. Also, the place was vaguely given out and I didn't have a scooter or any other means of transportation. Plus, I had my heavy backpack instead of my fun Phineas and Ferb bag. I also needed to get home.

So, the comic is called PHD (Piled Higher and Deeper). If you google "phd", it will come up as "phd comic". But here's a link incase anyone is interested ---> http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=1
