One Day

October 15, 1996 - Candy Store and Playground

Kibum's first year in Korea had been a disaster. He was having hard time adjusting to the people around him. After Kibum had found out that his father was having an affair with another woman and wanted to get a divorce with his mother, Mrs. Kim noticed Kibum had started building walls around him to prevent people from getting close to him. The neighbor kids wouldn't even play with him because they found him cold.

Since he didn’t have friends to play with, he would spend his afternoons with his grandmother

“Halmeoni, why do you name your store 'Kibum’s Candy World'?” a curious Kibum asked.

“It’s lame.” Kibum’s grandmother laughed as the boy made a disgusted face.

“Like I told you before, I name it 'Kibum’s Candy World' because this is your world. You love candies, don’t you?”

“Yes, I do love candies but it’s really lame, Halmeoni.” Kibum said as he got some pink gummy bears.

Their conversation was cut short when a bright boy wearing an oversized orange tee, light brown shorts and carrying a rabbit bag pack had walked in. He bowed and smiled to them. “Good afternoon,”

“Hi young boy, what do you want?”

“Ahjumma, you see, I have a younger brother and he really, really, loves colorful gummy bears so could you give me 5 grams of it.” the boy said with a lovely yet hyped voice.

Kibum was mesmerized by the boy’s smile as if he was looking at a star. It shone so brightly.

“Here are the 5 grams of colorful gummy bears you wanted, for 25 won.”

The boy counted his money then pouted. “Ahjumma, I only have 15 won with me. But if you want I can work here. I can mop the floor or wipe the windows please just give me colorful gummy bears for my brother.”

Kibum’s grandmother kneeled down and handed the gummy bears to the boy. “No need, boy. Colorful gummy bears are free for good boys.” Kibum watched as the boy’s eyes widen then went back to crescents as he smiled and bowed down at his grandmother.

“Ajumma, thank you so much.” the boy said as he hugged the old lady.

“Jinki,” a middle-age women walked into the store with a pretty boy holding her hands.

“Umma.”

“Lee Jinki, what did I tell you about leaving my side when we are out? You made me worried.” Jinki’s mother said as she kneeled.

“I only wanted to buy Tae some colorful gummy bears that he loves the most.” Jinki said.

“Really, hyung?” the pretty boy said happily.

Kibum was confused. How could two young boys shine like a star with their smiles. He just didn’t understand

“Yes, Tae. Here, I have 5 grams of colorful gummy bears. It costs 25 won but Ajumma gave it to me for free!” Jinki said but Taemin was too engrossed in eating the gummy bears to listen.

“Sorry for the trouble, Ajumma. Here is 25 won for the gummy bears.” Jinki’s mother said as she bowed.

“Like what I told your son, gummy bears are free for good boys.”

“Umma! Umma! Let’s go to the park. Tae wants to play with slide.”

“Ok,” Mrs. Lee said as the brothers danced in joy. “How about you, little boy? Would you like to come with us?”

Kibum looked at his grandmother as if he was asking for permission. “Min Jung, we're going to the park. Watch over the store while I am
gone.” Kibum’s grandmother said to the shop assistant.

When they arrived at the park, the Lee brothers ran straight to the swig. Taemin sat on the swing while his brother pushed him from the back. It had been a peculiar feeling to Kibum. He had never felt that kind of happiness because he was the only child to his parents. He stood there and watched the two boys. He felt a staggering pain in his heart. Why were they so happy?

“Kibum, what’s wrong? Why won’t you play with them?” Kibum’s grandmother asked.

The sounds of laughter and giggles suddenly vanished as a sound of sobbing broke out. “Kibum, what’s wrong?” Kibum’s grandmother worriedly asked as she wiped the tears on her grandson’s face.

“Why do I have to make friends with them? They will leave me too, just like what Appa did.” Kibum shouted as he ran away, tears flowing from his eyes.

“I am so sorry about that.” Kibum’s grandmother said as she chased after Kibum.

“Umma, why is he crying?” little Taemin curiously asked.

“I don’t know, Tae. He must've been upset from not being able to be with his father” Mrs. Lee said.

“Not being with his father? I think I understand him” Jinki softly said
