ONC: More Funds for College HIT Training
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has awarded $32.3 million in second-year funding to five community college consortia offering health I.T. training programs through 81 colleges across the nation.
The program, funded under the HITECH Act, is designed to provide intensive courses lasting up to six months, to train 50,000 I.T. specialists over five years. Classes started during the last half of 2010. The first 3,400 students will graduate by May 2011, says National Coordinator David Blumenthal, M.D.
Consortia leaders and their groups' awarded second-year funding include Bellevue College ($2.8 million), Los Rios Community College District ($5.2 million), Cuyahoga Community College District ($7.1 million), Pitt Community College ($9.7 million) and Tidewater Community College ($7.5 million).
