broken promises for broken hearts

They have asked me to take up another shift at my work. I feel so human as I wonder what the point of it is. When I was myself, I had a task that fulfilled a purpose and I continued doing it for eternity, or would have. Now this.. I labor to make money I could more easily steal and waste time that is no longer infinite ( Read more... )

Because working for compensation is better than stealing what isn't yours and could quite possibly have you put into jail?

If you do not care for your job, why do you not look for something else? Why do you think that your current position does not have purpose? You do have the right to decline the extra shift if you so desire, Phonos.

I am not sure I agree.

No work here will fulfill the same meaning as our work before. Do you not miss it?

I do not mind being able to enjoy the sunlight or interacting with people that aren't deceased. I still help the departed as much as I can, but the propitations are not as they once were. The meaning of my work has changed with time as the mortals have.

At least you can still help the departed to some extent. My work is as illegal as the stealing you are so against. My entire existence has been banned from modern society and you ask me to be glad of it.

All I mean is to take pride in your work, no matter the task.

Murder has been illegal for some time. The difference is your mortality.

You'll find your place, Phonos. I just wish I could actually be helpful to you in finding it. If your place involves those means, then that's what it means. And I hope that you are not discovered.

You are right about my mortality affecting my judgment.

[Phonos switches the video on, showing he's sitting at his desk in the back of their office, munching on animal crackers with utter apathy excepting the spark of anger in his eyes.]

Help me to kill someone.

[Meli stares at the screen for what likely feels like eons, somewhat unsettled by the look in Phonos' eyes. She'd seen it before, but perhaps not so intense and without the request presented to her.]

If I help you, then there must be some conditions.

[Phonos continued with his animal crackers for a moment, then stopped as he watched her. Something in his expression shifted to impatience in a way, excitement. He was anxious to be with her again in this capacity, to be squeezing life from someone with her by his side. Something he couldn't even understand himself.]

Of course.

[She bit her lip gently and sighed, intrigued by his reaction. Melinoe had always seen those chosen by Murder after the fact, and not all were deserving of it. She knew how quiet or how violent it could be, but only once had she been in its presence in the act. The struggle of the spirit to stay in the dying body could drive one mad. For Phonos, though, she would try.]

No innocents. No children. Your chosen must be deserving of such a fitting end.

Accompany me. Select the victim, if it is so important to you. Stay with me and witness that I am still what I claim to be.

It is important.

For you, I will endure a soul leaving the body. You deserve what is rightly yours.

When?

[There's an uncomfortable pause and Phonos grimaces slightly.]

Spend tonight with me. I am not sure that I trust myself to be patient at present.
