Day 5: Down in Dixie (7/25)

FAYETTEVILLE NC - Perhaps a fitting time to calm the nerves, my attending church on this trip was Trinity on the Hill UMC. I especially enjoyed the appropriately minor-key instrumental arrangement of “The Old Rugged Cross” from the pianist.

After picking Chad up, we had breakfast at that most southern of places (Waffle House) before hitting the road for our 2:00 game in Fayetteville.

Like the Trash Pandas, the Woodpeckers are fairly new to the minor-league party. Chad’s first immediate complaint was the lack of an elevator in the adjoining parking building. (Not a problem before the game, obviously; it was rectified by me picking him up at the next street corner after the game.)

Being in the low country of North Carolina on a summer Sunday afternoon, it was hot. So after a couple innings on the deck under an umbrellaed patio table, I stood under a fan on the concourse for the remainder of the game. The home crowd went home happy as the ‘Peckers shut out the Cannon Ballers from Kannapolis, 2-0.

After last night’s hotel room, I was quite impressed with today’s Travelodge. For the price I was paying, the room was quite spacious, allowing Chad unfettered access to the restroom in the back - which is rare in most hotel rooms we stay in.

In lieu of a local delicacy, I did a fast-food run for dinner - Burger King for me, Bojangles for Chad.
